This ebook is 3866 Kindle locations in length, and has a table of contents with a link to each story. I noticed about 10 typos or scanning errors.
I have read a number of this author's longer works and when I caught up with her at the Australian National Speculative Fiction convention earlier in the year (Conflux 9 in May 2013), I took the opportunity to pick up this collection of her shorter works to see how she went in this form.
To my mind, the collection is a credit to the author and definitely shows her depth as a story writer, as it runs the full range from the metaphorically magical (i.e. 'Taking Back the Words') through to serious science fiction (i.e. 'The Weed Eaters') informed by the author's own scientific career. I especially appreciated the opening story 'Highway' which captures the 'feel' of a particular deserted stretch of road in Queensland, Australia, which I have travelled myself a number of times. Though the story is, of course, speculative fiction, the road and the feeling one gets when driving along it is real in my experience and the author has translated that feeling into fiction very well.
Definitely worth a read.
I like when an author uses real places, facts or history as a basis for their tales and Ms. Jansen does that well with several of hers. She had a good cross section of science fact/fiction and modern fantasy and while there was a definite Australian flavor to a lot of them, that's to be expected, since the author lives there. Overall, it was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone that likes this type of fiction.
What i like in a short story collection is a lot of variety, which this book definitely has. Each story is set in a different setting and is based on a different idea. A small number of the stories were not to my liking or did not make sense. But hey, that is what short story collections are about - you can forgive the ones you don't get because there are more.
I am waiting for the sequel.
