I really loved the vampire/shifter books. I don't come across that many(thus far) and was pleased to find one that also involved 'fated mates'. Especially, in this book, it was rare for you to find your mate(for both the shifter/vampire kind). The shifter, Shawn, is not your common werewolf shifter which I was very excited about when I found out. I also liked that they both didn't automatically jump into the sac after minutes of meeting each other. Shawn, as far as he was concerned, was straight until he stumbled upon his very male mate. As far as fated mates go; It takes him a while to realize his feelings for Valentin(the vampire) are because they are mates. Same goes for Valentin. Valentin, also doesn't believe even if they are fated, their relationship will last.
This book also has action. Valentin is on the run and Shawn has been kicked out of his family. As they are on the run together, they have to learn to trust each other, help keep each other safe and come to terms they are in fact mates. Throw in the mix that Valentin is not healthy and Shawn might be the only one to be able to help him.
Now, why didn't I give this story a 4-5 star rating. I felt the author about 60-70% into the book crams way to much stuff and then rushes the end because of it. The fight scenes in the end are over before they begin. You find out more information, but then isn't elaborated on it. I thought, maybe, there would be a book 2, to at least help tighten up this ending better. Sadly, there is not.
SPOILER ALERT: I was confused Shawn's friend was a werewolf. Also, we find out about the vampire council then it is over. The head vampire told the two of them he wanted to see them again after they settle down at home. I get that Valentin is in fact a Master and in charge of his sire's line now. Does that mean they actually own all of his sire's possessions now. Are they both going to move back home as in Russia?
I am not going to accept that, just because the head vampire okayed their mated status, everyone else is okay with it. I was sure their would be more bloodshed over a vampire/shifter being mated. Also about how Valentin came into his Master status. I would think both of those things would put more targets on their backs.
Also, it was like oh, these two very higher ups(vampires) tried to annihilate the council, off with their heads. We don't need to investigate any further. No need to worry about the powerful wizard/witch that got away.
Additionally, Shawn's friend looked at his neck for the mark of being mated. Then in the end of the book, he never was marked. Shawn marked Valentin, but Valentin did not mark him. Finally, the very end. I kept going back and forth, looking to see if that was in fact it. The special 'stone' that everyone was looking for, Valentin knows where it is located(and other information). So, what are Shawn and Valentin going to do about it? Guess we won't find out any of these questions since their seems to be no book two. END SPOILER
Here is a quote from the book, “Now, all his worldly possessions consisted of the car, the money in his wallet, the clothes on his back, and whatever little he had in his duffel bag. And apparently a vampire with an attitude as a companion.”. There is more but you will need to read the book which I can highly recommend. I really enjoyed this book and hope that there is one to follow it. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
