The book takes the reader from the mountain lion attack of Laura, the family's daughter, through the trial against the county for negligence.
Throughout the book it is apparent the family struggles with the recovery of Laura as well as the strain of the trial. It is a multi- dimensional book covering the family dynamic and how it changes through the years. The author asks a lot of questions about the meaning of life and God's place (if any) in her life.
The reader is left with many of the author's questions challenging the reader to create answers . This book is an excellent choice for someone who loves nature, is questioning his/her faith, or just wants an interesting read. We couldn't put it down.
For a story of the indomitable human spirit for survival, hope against all odds and an indefatigable determination to see justice done, few books have done justice to one of these human dramas. Mattern manages all three in a relentless narrative of emotions lived on the edge.
It is a story of the daughter's survival and recovery. It is also a story of the legal problems that the family encountered and the spiritual challenges that the Mother faced. I found that I was reading very quickly to find out what was going to happen next. Very well-written.
