Out on My Own is a collection of poetry and prose. The book is a follow up to the author's first piece, Sanctuary of Expression, which I believe came out in 1999. You can find it here on Amazon.Com as well.

From what I read, both books were written while the author lived in New York City. What really got to me about this book is the subtle transition from small beginnings to the first taste of success, and all that it brought the writer along the way. Maybe he doesn't just lay out a timeline of events to the reader, but you can easily read between the lines and imagine what he must have been going through after reading each of his works.

I know I've been alone many times, I think we all have. And this book made me feel better about that. It also helped me to understand that, regardless of our lifestyle or position in the world, we all experience growing pains along the way. No matter who we are, life's troubles can impact us.

One piece in particular really got to me. The author writes about finally making it to The Rainbow Room in Manhattan. And although it sounds as though he was there due to some success in his life, he mentions someone not there with him at the time. It's humbling. He writes, "So, on this cold winter's night, in the heart of Manhattan, I finally made it to the Rainbow Room, such a view. And Kaylee Marie was there with me, holding my hand along the way. The little girl, unseen, unheard, always with me, for all time."

Bottom line, I'm not a big fan of poetry, and I was skeptical at first, but this book really brought it home. I'm looking forward to reading whatever this guy may be working on in the future. From what I hear, he's dabbling in film as well these days, so who knows what will be. Overall, a great read.

The poetry is better than ever, and the short stories offer an added extra to this book. It was a deep read. Recommended for anyone who has ever been out there on their own.
