This book features a sampling of some of the wonderful cartoon work of J.R. Williams. For several decades he was the most published cartoonist in America, and his 10,000 strips ran in over 700 newspapers. Born in 1888, the strip continued as a popular reprint over 20 years past his death in 1957. Williams really connects to working class families, and his characters are so real it seems you know them. He had repeated themes that were instantly recognizable like "Heroes are Made - Not Born", "Why Mothers Get Grey" and more. Other great books reprinting his cartoons are "U.S. Cavalry", "Classic Cowboy Cartoons", and "Bull of the Woods" all are great books, but this one is 5 times bigger and heft at nearly 2 pounds. It is 8" x 8" and 1 inch thick, with 398 pages, a stitched softcover that will not come apart like a glued one. Williams drew what he knew from personal experience, having spent 6 years as a cowboy or hired hand on different ranches, then spending 3 more years in the US Cavalry, and working in a machine shop and crane company. Later in life he owned his own ranch. When I open one of these I find myself reading it all the way through as it is hard to put down.

I think this is one of the best books on old comics I have ever purchased. The comics of the bygone years are funnier than the comics of today. And the artistry of J.R. Williams is so detailed and witty that I read it in one setting! I hope that they come out with more books of Out Our Way comics soon.

Old fashioned classic comics. They take me back to a simpler time when I was a kid. The art is very enjoyable to see.

I purchased my copy from Magus Books on Amazon Marketplace. Fast shipping and well packaged.

J.R. Williams was full of clever life-endearing anecdotes. I followed OUT OUR WAY as a wee kiddie and have not overcome the delight every time I see Williams's characters in OUT OUR WAY and his other syndicated cartoons from "back in the day."
