The book follows three life-long friends Seth, Emily and Andy. Here comes the sadness; Andy is dying of cancer, at this point in time there are no more treatment options and he is running out of time. Here in lies part of the rub...Andy and Emily have been dating for years. She has been by his side through both of his bouts of cancer. Seth has been there as well, for Emily because he is in love with her. Tired of laying around waiting to die, Andy makes all the arrangements for Seth and Emily to complete his bucket list- with him cheering on from the sidelines.
Some of these scenes were so well written and detailed that I felt I was there with them. When they visit the tattoo parlor I cheered with Andy as he got in his final screw you to the disease had me laughing with tears running down my face. And that wasn't the only time. As The bond between these friends was deep and true. I could really relate to their struggle to say goodbye and simultaneously hang on.
I don't know if I can say who the circumstances were harder for. Andy who knew he was dying and had to find a way to say goodbye and try to make it ok (as ok as it can be) for those left behind. Emily who still loved Andy but wasn't in love with him in the same way. But wanted to be there for him and didn't want to let go of the version of Andy that he used to be. Or Seth, who swallowed his heart for seven years so his best friend could be happy with the girl he loves. He promised to be there for Emily so she wouldn't be alone (she has suffered a lot of loss in her life), but who was going to be there for him to lean on.
When the truth of Seth's feelings are revealed by none other than Andy, my heart broke for all of them. It forced such a huge, yet understandable rift in the dynamic of all the relationships. Eventually, Seth and Emily figure things out for themselves. But that is not the end of the obstacles that face them. They know that they love each other but is it more than a friendship love?
This book was nothing if not gut wrenching and beautiful all at once. Brooke Cumberland took a situation that was ugly, dying always is even if it is expected, and worked her magic. She allowed Seth and Emily to find beauty from the ashes of what their life once was. I found myself wanting more and more of their story as they moved forward, together.
Seth is so sweet, patient and selfless. I was disappointed in Emily. She had always have feelings for Seth but once she found out about his feelings for her, all the feelings she ever had for him just disappeared! I did not like the way Emily treated Seth once the truth came out. I would have enjoyed this book so much more had Emily showed Seth some love. It was mostly Seth chasing her. At the end, I was left with Emily just settled with Seth because Andy was gone. It was Andy this, Andy that, Andy would have wanted this. Sure, I get that Emily wanted and got a tattoo to remember Andy but what about Seth? Was Seth not worthy enough to Emily because she didn't ink his name on her like she did to Andy. Lastly, Seth purposed to Emily with Andy's grandmother's ring! It was as Seth was written as a replacement for Andy. Seth deserved better!
Other than that, I liked it a lot!
Opening with Andy as the Prologue is powerful. It certainly sets the bar for the story. It makes you pause and think wow the road to reaching that peace would have been so horribly hard, but how strong is he for getting there, making it about making sure others are okay and not that he is inevitably going to die.
The feelings from all three main characters give this story a depth you wouldn't normally get. Hearing the battle from different sides gives you so much more to process.
Andy, he's so calm and accepting. He also knows his best friend is in love with his girlfriend.
"Andy cleared his throat. "So how long have you been in love with Em""
Andy both hates and accepts that Seth loves Em, he knows when he's gone the best person he could ask for will look after her like he would, like she is his world. While he can, he wants to live out his last days living life through them and seeing his two best friends find each other. He's so full of fun times and love, knowing he is going to die is heartbreaking, but he's learnt to accept it.
Seth is the yang to Andy's ying. Very much the opposite in fun loving personality. So it's great to watch him pushed out of his comfort zones to help Andy cross things off the list. He's also been in love with Em since the minute he met her.
"Spit it out Seth, it's not like I can beat the s*** out of you"
"Since the first day I saw her".
Yet never has he "shown" it. Seth's to loyal for that. He would never betray either of his best friends like that. Seth deals with the battle and loss of Andy differently to others. He internalises a lot to stay strong for others.
Emily has known both these boys for a long time. As the new awkward girl in town and class they befriend her and things naturally progress from there. There's never drama between the three of them when it becomes Andy and Em and then Seth because the connection between all three is stronger then anything. When Em goes into downward spiral after Andy's passing it's Seth that brings her back.
I personally would have loved to see more after Andy story. Their everyday life and development of their relationship. All the ways they keep the memory of Andy alive. The ending is a nice touch, though predictable. While there is deep loss in this story the HEA is what I was hoping for. So never fear, while you will shed a tear, happiness is the ultimate goal of this book.
The live life to the fullest message is strong, how even when someone is gone there is always hope for the next day.
One thing that I didn't like was the stereo typing of Aussies when they go cliff diving. That is not at all what we are all like, and this kind of stereo typing in a book just adds to the world perception of us.
