Review

Like the layers of an onion, OUT OF THE SHADOW peels away personalities, motivations, underlying motives, and dark, long-hidden secrets that immerse a circle of people in a web of dangerous associations. The conclusion is riveting, unexpected, and as satisfying as the rising psychological suspense which begins from the first page and ends with a bang.   D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review
This is such a terrific page-turner that I lost sleep on the three nights that it took for me to complete it.  By the time I was two-thirds of the way through, I couldn't stand it any longer; I cheated and checked out the ending--and I was blown away. I hope J. K. Winn writes her second novel very, very soon. Next time, I'll try hard not to start with the last chapter.  Debra Sponable, Nights and Weekends
Winn's suspenseful thriller thrusts readers into the intense trauma that may be Becca Rosen's psychological undoing...A dynamic thrilling read for readers willing to focus on more than one perspective.  Kirkus Reviews

This is a classic Whodunit story accompanied with tragedy and loss.

It is based on a story of a girl named Rachael (I will refer to her as Becca, because that is what she is referred to as for most of the story) and her struggle with repressed memory. It begins with the tragic loss of her husband as well as her being raped in her own home. She begins seeing a Psychologist, Sarah, for help. She feels as though her recent rape has a connection to abuse that occurred when she was just a child.

This book runs two story lines at the same time. Sarah, the psychologist, is holding a weekend convention speaking about Becca's case. This is how we hear about her story. It isn't told in real time. It is told by Sarah to her audience.

Sarah describes many men that Becca comes in contact with through the course of her story. You never exactly figure out who the rapist and murder is until it starts being revealed towards the end. It keeps you guessing throughout the whole thing and really holds your attention. I felt like it was every guy at one point or another. It took me til the end, when it was explained to truly figure it out.

I love how this book was written. I was hooked from the beginning and didn't want to put it down. I was sad when it ended because I wanted it to just keep going.

Overall, 5/5 stars. This story was fun to read (despite the rough topics) and I would recommend it to suspense lovers like myself.

The storyline hooked me from the beginning, but I have to wonder if the author had anyone proofread her manuscript. There were numerous examples of misused words, e.g., using the word "conscious" when what she really meant was "conscience", "pack" instead of "pact", etc. Maybe this doesn't bother other readers, but to me it seemed amateurish.

`Out Of The Shadow' was one of the best thrillers I have read this year. Winn created a spine tingling, action-packed, suspense-filled, novel that will have you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

I loved this novel so much. The twists and turns were so creative. I was definitely thrown for a loop on the whole `who done it' part. She was very good at concealing her bad guy up until the end, which is a very tricky thing to do when it comes to writing mysteries. Becca's story draws you in from the very first page, maybe even the very first sentence for some of you. I know I was hooked from the first sentence, this novel just takes off as a very fast pace from the beginning and is a steady ride throughout the book. This is a big plus and very hard to do, so I give her a lot of credit and much respect for that accomplishment.

The plot was amazing, the writing was brilliant, her clues and the way the stories tie into each other was so brilliant and I loved it.

I really love stories like this they are such entertaining reads and you really cannot put them down. `Out Of The Shadow' was no different I read through it quickly because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. This action-packed read is a must have in your suspense collection. I really loved `Out Of The Shadow' and everything about it. I recommend it to any mystery or thriller fan or anyone who just wants to sink their teeth into a good book.

What a brilliant psychological thriller, so well written by the author who has years of experience in this field of psychoanalysis. This story is so realistic as the characters come to life in this murder mystery, with the female character being stalked and shadows from her past pursuing her. No wonder she is so mixed up and not knowing who she can trust. From the first page to the end it is a fast paced book with an unusual twist at the end. A must read book, look forward to reading more of this authors work.

J. S. Winn chose to tell her story through the voice of the psychologist for the victim, for an interesting movement back and forth between a professional conference where Sarah Abrams is presenting a paper to her peers, and where those in attendance ask questions about the actual victim and what happened to her... In one way, this established credibility for what was happening to the victim, since a concerned outsider was involved.

On the other hand, readers lose the buildup suspense to some extent... There are also some proofreading issues but they didn't detract...too much...

But not enough to prevent readers trying to solve the mystery of just who...is stalking Becca Rosen...

For as soon as we begin the book we are directly in the scene of a hand pressing down on Becca's mouth, telling her not to move or scream. At first thinking she was in the middle of a nightmare, she struggled but soon realized that the pain was... very real...

It was 3:15 a.m. when he got off of her, got dressed and assured her she had not seen the last of him..

But where had David been--why hadn't he prevented this?

Then she found him, called for help, but "His flat eyes told her everything."

Becca Rosen, however, was faced with cops that had her as the number one suspect. No matter how much time they spent talking to her, asking her questions, they just didn't seem to be looking for anybody else. They even questioned whether she had been raped...

Becca had no choice but to try to help herself!

At the same time, however, she knew she had to move on and make a new life for herself. One new person entered her life just by becoming a new neighbor. Evan was a nice guy and took things easy as they became acquainted.
