The author puts you into the hair raising, nerve racking shoes of Lieutenant Amy Morgan who was flying through the ranks of the Metropolitan Police Department after she bravely confronted a desperate armed bank robber, talking him into surrendering. She became a hero, indeed being the first female ever promoted to Lieutenant in the homicide division, surpassing her husband, Ron Somers, also in the homicide division. Ultimately this led to their divorce as Ron wanted Amy to quit the force and become a housewife and stay-at-home mother to their son, Paul. However, this was out of the question. Police work was in her blood. Her father, Captain Morgan, had been a well respected police officer on the force.
A serial killer is terrorizing the people of the city, specifically women, nabbing them off the streets at night, torturing and killing them and then leaving his signature: a lavender ribbon entwined in their blonde hair.
While on a murder scene, Amy was run down by a barreling truck leaving her with a broken back and broken body. The driver of the truck was never caught. After a long recovery from her wounds she returned to the force only this time as an instructor at the police academy as her superiors thought she was no longer physically able to handle her former position.
It had been two years since The Phantom, as the serial killer is now known, when he struck again. Amy is desperate to pick up where she left off with this case. This was her case; her squad's case.
Amy is being followed and watched every day. She is a trained police officer and she knows when her skin crawls as she walks down dark streets, and the tension builds to unbearable dimensions, that this is not just paranoia. She quickly suspects she herself is The Phantom's target. The police force cannot protect her. What good would it do to be surrounded by protection 24/7? So Amy keeps all of this information to herself and a couple of others. She knows that she... and she alone, must capture and bring justice to all of the women that have fallen into the hands of this rogue maniac.
I guessed several times just who the serial killer was and I was wrong until the very end and then came the shocker! I was on needles and pins throughout the entire book. Now for my own nightmares........
Great 5 star thriller!
