- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2023Great book, so inspirational, I loved the format of the book where people of different ages with SPD give their testimony about their challenges on growing with SPD. This book give you a lot hope reading on how many teenagers and young people with SPD could make a good an normal life and even thrive.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2019I read "The Out of Sync Child" over a decade ago, after my daughter was first diagnosed with Dyspraxia. At the time, it helped us to understand how PT could help improve her fine motor skills, but also to accept that she would also have to deal with sensory issues all her life.
Now that she is a college student, I wish that I had found THIS book back when my daughter entered high school. As she's grown, a 504 helped with issues related to Dysgraphia, but other issues related to the Dyspraxia and accompanying sensory integration problems cropped up. Those issues were exacerbated by younger siblings (one of which is also a sensory kid, but in the opposite sense), and having to cope with large crowds of other students on a daily basis. No wonder her anxiety was through the roof through her entire high school years!
I have now read this book cover to cover, and handed it off to my daughter to read and keep for reference. It was very helpful to me to hear stories of how other sensory kids/adults felt, and how they have adapted as they have grown. I appreciate all the tips that are provided, and I'm sure my daughter will be going back to this book over and over to look for ideas on how to deal with her issues as situations arise.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2018This book really opened my eyes to all of the ways in which sensory issues can make daily life more exhausting and difficult. As an adult with sensory over-responsiveness, I found it extremely helpful to hear about SPD in the context of older, more independent individuals. The stereotype of SPD is the non-communicative problem child and most books on SPD are geared towards parents dealing with young children. I identified with many of the stories in this book, and found some new ideas to incorporate into my daily life as well. The book explains a bit about the physiology of SPD without using overly arcane language, making it accessible and conversational. The chapters on relationships were particularly good and gave me a lot to think about.
My one criticism of this book is that it does not really address adults with SPD, despite the title. It stops with adolescence, and doesn't exactly explain how people living on their own might face different challenges than teenagers and college students. I sort of felt like it assumes that there is no further development that takes place after adolescence. A future book might cover topics such as dealing with SPD in the midst of a career, raising a family, and looking towards retirement options.

Excelente libro. Es uno de los poquísimos libros que habla sobre la adolescencia y adultez de las personas diagnosticadas en la niñez con sensory processing disorder. El primer libro habla sobre los bebés y niños y este, la segunda parte habla sobre adolescentes y adultos.

I bought the first book many years ago when my son was diagnosed with sensory integration disfunction, which was so helpful, so I was so happy to have this book to help now that my son is 18. Easy read.
