I recently finished reading “Bright Green Lies” which convincingly debunks all technological methods of halting climate change through showing how mining or extracting materials for them, then building them with concrete or (worse) asphalt roads and support structures, and then disposing of them yields more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and degradation of forests, fields, and animal and plant friendly areas. I look at roads, my laptop, and electric lights and feel guilty. Now, this book of George Monbiot shows a plausible path for our working ourselves out from from this environment quagmire. He shows how it is being done locally in many places on Earth, and sketches how it might be done universally.

It is published by Verso and I can only wonder if the title of the book is a play on Alex Cockburn's last memoir, A Colossal Wreck (also published by Verso). This slim book is part manifesto and part tract. It is designed to encourage those of us on the Left that have been looking for a way to repackage our message.

Monbiot has a hopeful message that goes something like this: if we reform our elections and decentralize power as locally as possible and throw in many more community building structures we will get out of the wreckage we are in now.

Strangely he never really talks about economics or how the means of production will be owned in his new world. That alone disqualifies this book’s seriousness in my eyes.

But, he is hopeful. I could go on but why bother.

I have known and support the views of George Monbiot for some time. His commitment to the natural world and a change of direction by the UK government in this regard is well founded. However, the work of Chomsky regarding the shortfalls of Capitalist and neo-liberal societies has been well documented for many decades. In many ways George Monbiot is also reflecting these views. Personally, I would rather read Chomsky's books, and watch his videos
which are so succinct and well thought out. I would encourage admirers of Monbiot's work to visit the work of Chomsky, although in his 90s, is essential reading for observers of this chaotic and divided world.

Out of the Wreckage: excellent book but lacks one particular omission when outlining the human traits. He missed or chose not to say anything about the congenital trait humans have for lying to themselves, fellow humans and even other species. The latter for a carnivore is inevitable but the other two forms, unless recognised and addressed, with view to eliminating the trait, leaves the civilised caring progress, imprisoned.
