All except that Erin is far from ordinary, she is CIA, and I love how Lewin keeps the characters guessing about who Erin is. Martial arts trained, Erin is tough, educated and more than a little headstrong even for her own good.
The storyline opens when a nine-year-old boy goes missing, and days later, a second child is kidnapped all the apparent doing of the man with "quick hands" last seen while he was doing magic tricks. On an outing with her niece, Erin doesn't recognize the man, but its his hands that seem familiar. When she learns of the second kidnapping, she brings her suspicions to Agent Donovan. Here the two learn that just as a magician kidnapped Erin's sister, the nine-year-old's kidnapper was playing shell games with Cody, a street smart nine year old" who wouldn't trust easily. Further they learn the criminal was selling ice cream when the five year old went missing, all while performing magic tricks to attract the children.
Ms. Lewin takes risks all over the place dealing with the subject matter of kidnapped children for profit. She does it mostly off screen, but when she does provide scenes to advance her story, she makes these kids the heroes in their own drama. Erin and Alec break all kinds of rules, legally and procedurally with regard to their agencies, but they're driven to bring down an international kidnapping ring. Cleverly written, I love how both Eric and Alec drop hints to the bad guys that they're on to them. Clever, and in their crummy faces, I cheered for these two protagonist risk takers.
OUT OF REACH is everything a thriller should be. If there's one thread I wish Ms. Lewin would have tied up it's what happened to an analyst helping Erin. He was a dynamite secondary character and I would have loved to know his outcome. I also wanted to know whose blood was on the blade.
Just sayin', before reaching for OUT OF REACH, do so on a day you'll have plenty of time. I didn't want to put it down.
Outstanding writing with enough creative plot twists to satisfy most thriller. Highly recommended.
