When Pete decides to physically go exploring for the reef of gold that has been his obsession, he heads into the Queensland outback. Here he meets Scottie and his family and friends on the family station where he feels the reef is located.
The descriptions of this part of the country are fantastic, having a daughter who lives in close proximity to that area I can say it brought back fond memories and made me want to jump in the car and drive out there. The drought we suffered recently, and are looking like going back into, made it so real and honestly for anybody who hasn’t experienced being in a drought and on tank water- please take notice if this part of the story. This wonderful resource is wasted yo so many!
I have to say I am petrified of snakes, I know I live on a rural property 🤦🏻♀️, but holy moly talk about get your heart racing in that scene. Another everyday life occurrence for some and although not always a walk in the park, living with these and other wildlife explored in the story can create some interesting t8mes.
Scottie and Pete are total opposites but you know that old saying, well in this instance it is right. However, nothing is ever exactly the way it seems. I really liked the dynamics of their relationship and their chemistry was terrific. I look forward to reading book two to see how things pan out because I HVE to know what happened!
Pete is a young, enthusiastic historian and his eagerness rubs off onto you so much so you want him to succeed. Scottie is a hard-working, likable character who you feel sorry for because he’s trapped in a situation where he feels he can’t be true to himself. His family and the station hands, who are more like family, are all terrific and the backbone of the station alongside him.
I particularly enjoyed reading the Dreamtime story of creation, this story never gets old no matter how many times you hear or read it. The descriptions of the outback are on point and I could almost taste the red dust and feel it in my clothes.
Steamy and passionate love scenes form the physical side to the romance in the story but the immediate attraction and chemistry between Scottie and Pete is obvious and let me just say... felt so right.
This is book one and is a cliffhanger but I didn’t feel frustrated at the end, rather excited to read the next book.
It all makes for a well woven tale, one that doesn't scrimp on detail, or impact. Both characters likeable in their own right, I felt sad for Scottie - his situation making it difficult to be who he was. But when Pete comes along, a man on a mission of his own, they find comfort in each other.
If you want a story about adventure, love and living your truth no matter the struggle, all with a backdrop of harsh beauty that only the outback provides, as well as a wonderfully woven mystery, you can't go past this one.

I quickly fell in love with Pete and Scottie, the geeky student and the seriously hot 40 year-old rancher. Pete is in search of the undiscovered gold reef he believes runs through the land owned by Scottie. Scottie lives in the closet, afraid to come out because of the impact it could have on the station.
But it isn't only the two men finding love when they least expect it that made this story so readable, it's the details of life in the outback, the descriptions of the landscape, the tough life in a world where water is scarce and bush fires are frequent. It shows the huge amount of research needed to make this so real.
Ms Grech brings every character to life, Scottie's Ma and his Nan are brilliant as strong women surviving in a man's world and his sister is someone we need to know more about.
This is a two book series and you will want to dive straight into book two the moment you finish this one.
Definitely one of my best reads this year.
This is an amazing book. Ann has created realistic and three dimensional characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. Her vivid descriptions of the outback makes you feel as though you are there as well. If you are looking for a genuine Australian outback novel, it doesn’t get much better than this! If you lived Red Dirt Heart, you will adore this book as well. 100% recommended!!
