I hadn't heard of the Breaker series before I came across the novella Outcome as a free promotion. It's set in the world of the Breaker series, but is a standalone. I snapped it up and read it in one setting. The story works quite well on its own (how a man, his daughter, and a woman from the man's past) deal with the outbreak as they try to flee New York.

I've read a lot of both self-pubbed and dystopian fiction. I was very pleasantly surprised at Robertson's solid writing chops. He writes clearly, gives the reader distinctive characters, and moves the plot along as well as any traditionally pubbed writers. He's also great at world-building, creating a post apocalyptic world that is both familiar, but fresh, not something easy to do in the well trod dystopian genre.

Needless to say, I was eager to read the first book in the actual series. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I went to buy that book and found that it and the next two books in the series were 99c. Needless to say, I snapped them up and am already halfway through the first one, which is just as good. If you're into dystopian novels, I think you'll enjoy this series.

I found this novel to be quite frustrating! It began with a great deal of promise and potential with a strong female lead character who chooses to follow her heart and try to save at least a couple people more than just herself when she foresees the end of the world. It began with a good pace and a lot of potential, but then the story seemed to just get stuck in the rut of the search. If I had known that I was going to read an entire book, minus the first and last chapters, that was solely about hunting down people rather than choosing to actually get out of Dodge when the SHTF I would never have begun the book. I only stuck with it all the way thru because I just couldn't believe the WHOLE book would be such a narrow scope with very limited drama or adventure. I would probably give this author another chance because I felt there was a lot of potential, but this book was not one I would recommend.

I would suggest you read this before reading the other books in the series.

It gets you ready for what happens next.

Good Stuff!

I've read the complete series twice. Robertson is very good at writing stories that hold the readers attention. His books are usually written with two stories running concurrently; at a critical point in the story, he breaks off and picks up the other story at a critical point. At first, this bothered me, but I soon realized that these breaks in the story line allowed me to mark my place and put the book down. The story of Ellie Colson, in "Reapers" (Book 4 of the series) is one of my favorite stories & characters in the series. "Outcome" is the prequel to the series, explaining the onset of the plague that almost wipes out humanity, and explaining how Ellie, a federal agent of sorts, came to be farming wheat and baking bread near Lake Placid with a "daughter" who wasn't actually related to her. The other stories in the Breakers series tend to center around the conflict with the aliens who had planted the plague in the first place; "Reapers" is a more conventional story of a woman's determination to protect her family and survive in a post-apocalyptic world. "Outcome" gives us some insight into the person of Ellie Colson; her role with a federal agency apparently tasked with tracking such things as plague outbreaks, and her decisive action to protect someone she cares about. Through this novella, we get some insight into the beginning of the plague and the unsuccessful attempts of the government to control it. As in all his books, "Outcome" is fast-paced, well written, and a most-satisfying read.

I thought the characters were really shallow and under developed. I just didn't care about them--any of them. So much of the story just didn't make sense. The main character hasn't talked to her ex-fiance in six years, but at the end of the world he's the first one on her mind? I totally didn't buy it. Right off in the beginning she just starts shooting people because why wouldn't she? My husband asked what I thought (we have similar taste) and I told him I didn't recommend it. If it had been longer I probably wouldn't have been able to finish it. Frankly I'm surprised it is so well reviewed! Did we all read the same book?

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review.

Ellie Colson an agent of the Department of Advance Analysis has just realized that a new virus is about to wipe out everyone on the planet. No one not even her own bosses believe that the world is about to be wiped out. Ellie knows that everyone is about to die and she does not want to be one of them. She knows that this new virus is going to spread like wild fire.

Ellie knows the only way to survive is to leave town and go into hibernation and wait it out. So she takes off to New York in search of her ex-fiance Chip to warn him and his daughter as to what is about to hit the world. Upon arriving in New York she learns that Chip and his daughter has already been taken in to quarantine. Does Chip and his daughter have the virus? Has Ellie arrived to late to save them? Can she help them to escape from their captors? Will she keep them from getting the virus? Will they all three survive?

I really enjoyed reading Outcome it kept me on the edge of my seat thinking what is going to happen now? Are they going to get out of New York in time? I loved all the characters but I especially liked Chip. He adopted this little, sweet, precious baby and raised her as his daughter all by himself. He is what you would call a "single father" meaning he had no help from anyone in raising his daughter. She had no mother growing up only a father.

Although Outcome was a short read it had my eyes glued to the pages until the last page. I couldn't put it down. I just had to know if Ellie, Chip and his daughter would survive. I was pulling for them the whole way. Wanting all of them to make it out alive. If you have not read Outcome yet then I think you should give it a try. I really don't think you would be disappointed.
