Improvement needed to keep the two fabric layers together
on February 28, 2016
The size is very good to spread out for 2 people's picnic or more. It is slightly noisy because of the nylon waterproof side. The other side is polyester flannel material. We've order another blanket on Amazon and it was such cheap construction and material compared to this one. We haven't used it yet so we can't test if it's slippery like other reviews. Quality over all seems good. However I don't think this item washes well. We bought two: one for ourselves and one for my daughter. She has not used or washed hers yet. We washed ours (we don't want chemical smell when we use it) and the fabric side became all bunched up. Once you start pulling it to smooth out it stretches that side becomes larger than the nylon side. It is because the two layers are held together by some kind of adhesives that don't stay put after washing. We contacted the seller and was sent a replacement. We were told to wash in cold water (which we did with the first blanket but in regular cycle). We washed the replacement blanket in delicate cycle with cold water using top loading machine. Unfortunately there are some small areas that had the same problem as the first time. The adhesive had loosen the two layers so the flannel side became wrinkled in some small areas. I was able to smooth it out a little bit. To lessen future wrinkling I stitched the two layers together along the plaid's lines like quilting. This took some time to do because my stitching made square areas of about 2-3 inches wide. Of course in future washes the wrinkle probably will happen again but at least it will be in small areas and the two layers are still attached throughout the blanket due to stitching.
It's too bad that the idea and good quality are executed only at the perimeter of the blanket instead of having stitching inside. Or at least the adhesive should be much stronger or quilted together.
My daughter has not used hers yet but I guess I'll stitch hers up just like mine before washing. However, I wouldn't recommend this until they've improved the adhesive or stitch both layers together. I assume that would take up more labor cost.
