That impression wasn't that far off the mark – different maker, but the same quality product at an amazing value. At this low price point - $8.99 – one might expect a bit of roughness, gaps between the blade and the handle, poorly finished blade, etc..
There was none of that. There are no rough spots, no gaps, and the blade is among the sharpest I've ever received (ranking up there with a few custom knives, and better than all but those few). (At one time I owned over 100 custom knives and probably another 100 or so manufactured knives – and I still own a dozen or so of the Swedish brand that this Braudel Outdoor Knife favorably compares to)
I am particularly impressed with the blade sharpness and the even grind – it is rather remarkable at this price point. The Braudel doesn't just slice through paper: it unzips it with just the slightest sound as the paper almost magically separates itself.
Carving tent stakes and pot-holders proved to be nearly effortless with the Braudel Outdoor Knife, as was making fire sticks and shaving off paper-thin slices of dry wood to aid in starting a fire.
At 4 and 1/16 inches in length, the blade is the perfect size for the “Bushcrafting” enthusiasts as well as hunters, campers, hikers, and general use around the home. I believe the blade steel is stainless, but I'm not sure of the specific type. The blade certainly seems to hold its edge well (so far in my use) as I haven't had to touch it up even once (so far). The blade does have millimeter marks engraved on one side of the blade (0 to 60, with 5 millimeter intervals).
The handle measures 4 and 11/16 inches in length and features a blade guard. Both ends of the handle are bright orange in color (black handle) – making it much easier to locate the knife if misplaced outdoors. The handle is very comfortable in a variety of grips; never once did I experience any hot-spots or rough areas that irritated my hand. The handle itself is made from a textured rubber material; providing excellent grip and comfort.
The included sheath is made from plastic – again reminding me of the Swedish maker – and provides a very secure hold on the knife itself. I'm able to hold the sheath upside down and shake it vigorously, without the knife dislodging itself from the sheath. The sheath has a drain hole at the bottom and the traditional button attachment on the top (same as many of the Swedish brand models). The sheath can be used with a belt up to 1.5 inches in width. The belt would have to be a fairly thin belt though.
I'd consider this Braudel Outdoor Knife to be a good value at $40. At $8.99 it is an outstanding value and priced low enough that nearly everyone can afford several of them – one for the garage, one for the truck, one for the backpack, etc.. At the very least the Braudel Outdoor Knife can make things easier for you; and in a worst-case scenario, it could end up being the difference that saves your life.
Update: I received the new one, and it did the same thing. Figured out it leaks. The red end cap is not sealed to the black handle. I coated the inserting part of the red end cap in black silicone caulk, shoved it into the handle, and wiped off the excess. It now floats perfectly. So it should be sold as a "potentially floating knife if you modify it appropriately."
