The bag is a good compromise between weight and strength. The fabric will take a lot of punishment. I like the division of packable space, and top and rear access. Some prefer a more basic single-opening bag. Some prefer to strap big lumps of dead animals to the frame
The waist belt, however is simply inadequate. A MOLLE waist belt (not a battle belt or war belt) can be buckled on to this good frame without any modification. You can get one on Amazon right now for $8.14.
You will read in several places that this pack is for small folk, shorter people, or torso lengths up to 18ins, etc. However, the people who designed the frame put out a pdf on its use wherein you may read the sizes it will fit:
[...] Google "enduroflex frame manual".
If your Boy Scout has a torso length longer than 22ins, a waist larger than 42ins, and a chest larger than 47ins, he is, as my dear old Da would say, a hairy-arsed "boy".
The frame is designed to keep the weight off your shoulders. It also has a nice pocket of air between you and the backpack, cushioned with a stretchy mesh fabric that is quite comfortable.
BEST PART EVER: The strap placement can be changed, so it can grow with your child!
It has been pretty water resistant so far.
It has one large compartment in the middle which is separated by a lining midway. You can reach your arms through the sides of the lining to get at things in the bottom of the upper compartment from the opening of the lower compartment.
We went backpacking with some friends and they bought 2 of these same packs for their kids as well and they have been completely satisfied with them.
The one thing I wish it had is a mesh water bottle pocket on one side. As it is, you just put the water bottle in one of the tall side pockets.
