What is great about it:
It is actually quite fantastic wearing down on your head. Just like a down jacket, it makes your head feel warm but not hot in a range of temperatures and cuts the wind extremely well.
And, in the case of a S/M on a smaller head, it fits tight so it doesn't look like you are wearing a poofy down jacket wrapped around your head.
When pulled down over your ears, it's kind of like cupping your hands over your ears-- you hear the heavy bass of your footsteps... takes a little getting used to, and is quite different from a normal knit hat. Not a deal-breaker, though, and I'll put up with a lot on cold Chicago days in order to feel comfortable.
The sizing is very tricky. Because it's nylon, not stretchy knit fabric, the hat has an elastic bit in the back made to pull it in at the base of your skull. Ideally, this would make the hat just pull in under your ear lobes and the other side rest snug above your eyebrows-- it almost does this for me, which is lucky, but it's a tiny bit tight and wants to sit on my eyebrows or just above my earlobes. It is hard to guess the size for this, because you're not talking about hat sizes (circumference at your brow), but instead a circumference from your brow to below your ears... I imagine there's a good bit of variety here depending on how thick your neck is and how long your head. In my case, the hat is exactly my hat size (a size 7 1/8) but for it to sit below my ears it would need to be about an inch wider... but I would worry that the L/XL would be longer and wind up covering my eyes or make a poofy worm-head thing on top, so I'll stick with this tight one.
The hat weighs less than an ounce (my size L/XL weighed 27 grams on my kitchen scale), and packs into a pouch that is sewn into the inside of the cap. I now keep it in my briefcase for emergency warmth, and it is practically weightless and takes up virtually no space at all. I'm also a backpacker, and this will definitely be in my pack on my next trip for nighttime warmth in camp. I've never had a hat with a better warmth-to-weight ratio!
In all, this is a fantastic product with the exception that I have to wear it in a way other than intended in order to make it comfortable. This turns out to be a minor issue, however. If OR replaced the elastic with a thicker band, this would be five stars without a doubt, but it is nevertheless a worthwhile purchase for anyone who wants an incredibly light-weight, warm winter hat.
Very uncomfortable to wear and I doubt I could make it through a night sleeping in this hat. A disappointment considering how nice OR gear is in general.
If this hat were instead built over a stretchy interior lining with no elastic it would be sublime.
The one thing that I do not like about it is doesnt have a sleek low profile to it. Perhaps I'm just used to the close fitting wool hat. In my opinion, it kind of looks like a low profile turban. It's stylish but kind of out of the norm for me.
Overall I like this hat. I would use it as more of a basecamp type hat. Using my wool hat for hiking. I haven't tried it out as a sleeping cap but I can imagine it would slip off with a lot of tossing and turning.
