Using a quick example, the Windstop worked great yesterday on a three-hour backcountry ski jaunt up the hills. The wind pounded in the tree clearings and I felt nothing but warmth. Even with heavy perspiration in parts of the trek, it seemed to breathe well also. Naturally, it is can bit hard to hear your buddies and their chit chat with the ears covered, but that's getting picky.
The medium fit me well, but I would try and check sizing in person if you can as it is a trim fit unlike the knitted Peruvian caps you can grab. Sometimes I wear a nylon Nike DriFit running cap underneath and the OR cap fits comfortably but doesn't feel tight or too snug. The straps, I found to be superfluous.
A few people mentioned it looks goofy. I don't know, maybe it does. It doesn't scramble eggs or cook bacon either. I didn't pick up any girls out in the hills with this thing - but it does protect my ears well. That's what I bought it for.
As far as fit goes, I have a large head and most micro fleece caps don't cover my ears completely. That's why I purchased this item. I will say though that if you purchase the large, it should fit a large head nicely. But the inside of the cap is kind of rough. At least rough for a guy with thinning hair that keeps it cut very short. The inside isn't micro-fleece. It feels almost like some kind of foam. The inside seams in my other fleece caps are stitched down smooth where you can't feel them on your scalp. The inside seams in this one stick out quite a bit. Nearly 1/4" or 4-5 mm. It was quite uncomfortable.
The elastic chin strap is probably effective in blistering cold winds, but it was also pretty uncomfortable.
Thank you Amazon for having such a painless return process.
This Peruvian hat was well reviewed and it lives up to those other reviews. Very comfortable and toasty. Ears and neck are covered. Keeps the chilly wind out.
Bonuses for my purpose: Rolls up into a tiny little package I keep tucked in the corner of my bag. Very lightweight.
Combine it with Columbia Sportswear Bugascarf and you're ready for those sub-zero days.
I wish they made an XL, but the L fits my generally XL sized head pretty well.
Outdoor Research makes good stuff and I have plenty of their gear in my toy collection. Their gators are awesome for skiing and heavy trekking, and their hats have always been well made. Although this hat is not made in the USA like a lot of the older gear I own (talking 30 year old gators), it appears well made and sturdy. The material has a good feel to it, plenty soft and warm. It blocks the wind and covers the ears, which Is my favorite feature, especially when cycling in cold conditions. No more painful ears from the cold! And the large size actually fits my head comfortably, which is a relief. It fits well under cycling helmets, although I find it best to enlarge the helmet fitting before donning the hat.
No negatives to report in a few weeks of use in temperatures down to 30F.
If you have a big noggin and need a cap that can cover your ears and fit under a helmet, I highly recommend this hat!
