I bought the black extra-high tension version, and I'm disappointed. I'm new to rock-climbing and nowhere near able to support my bodyweight with my fingertips the way some routes require. I used just my fingertips on the exerciser like the instructions say, and even the black one is still easy to squeeze.
Just a suggestion: Mathematically, supporting my body weight with 8 fingers works out to more than 20 lbs per finger, far above your maximum tension of 9 lbs. How about coming out with some heavy duty models in the 15-25 lb range for people who are looking to seriously improve their grip? You'd make a killing selling them at Amazon and REI.
So I like it. It's mainly for people trying to improve fingering on a guitar. It's also helpful for all those other things the company lists. But it builds callouses and builds fingertip strength. The one improvement I would recommend is that the spring on pinky be weaker than the rest.
Think for a second. Should the tension on the spring that works your pinky be the same as your index finger? Shouldn't even be close. So at this point, you might need two of these at the two different tensions to properly work out your index/middle fingers and your ring/pinky fingers.
I have small women's hands, but I rock climb, so I like to have a hand exerciser that will work the hand and forearm muscles so I can grip better on the holds when I can't get to the climbing gym. This gripper works perfectly for all parts of the finger to articulate. This spring weight (7 lb) is almost too soft in my opinion, even with fingertip gripping, but I climb frequently so maybe my hands are stronger than most?
The palm grip on the version I received is much flatter than what is pictured, with just a small inward curve toward the one end and a flat grip the rest of the length (rather than curved outward like the product photo).
இ Fuzzy Wuzzy's Summary: ѾѾѾѾѾ Highly recommended with warm fuzzies!
I purchased several of these black-colored heavy-tension and red-colored medium-tension GripMaster hand exercisers from Amazon in 2005, and since I have religiously used the GripMaster every day since 2004 as part of my pre-typing or pre-guitar-playing finger warm-up routines, I thought that I should add to the pile of 5-star raves. I originally bought a heavy-tension GripMaster from a local guitar store in 2004 to help improve my finger strength, coordination, dexterity, agility, and accuracy while playing steel-string acoustic guitar. But I quickly realized that by performing a variety of finger and hand exercises using this simple device, both following the instructions in the included pamphlet and adding my own exercises, my typing speed and accuracy also improved, and I could type for far longer periods of time without any hand fatigue. So since 2004, I use my GripMaster every day, even if I do not plan on playing guitar or typing for that day, to help maintain the fitness level in my hand and forearm muscles. This hand exerciser also will improve your hand strength for a multitude of sports.
If you are an avid gardener, computer user, construction worker, assembly-line worker, musician, or are frequently involved in arts and crafts or other activities that involve repetitive motions with your hands, you are at risk of slowly acquiring repetitive strain injuries or stiffness in your hand and fingers because those kind of activities require repetitive motions and prolonged tension in your hand muscles (e.g. holding a shovel, golf club, paint brush, or tool in your hand for long periods of time and making repetitive motions). This hand exerciser will loosen and strengthen your hand muscles if you warm up your hands with GripMaster exercises before you engage in those activities, and also work out the tightness in your hand muscles using the GripMaster after you have finished those activities.
I like this GripMaster so much that I even pack it into my luggage whenever I go on vacation. Some hand exercisers are too bulky while the GripMaster is very compact and easy to bring along during travels. And unlike the V-shaped hand grip exercisers that are commonly sold, the GripMaster helps to work out individual finger joints and muscles.
If you play steel-string acoustic guitar, you should skip the yellow X-Light Tension and blue Light Tension model, and go straight for the red Medium Tension (better) or black Heavy Tension (best) model. This will immensely improve your guitar playing skills, both in accuracy and speed.
So why did I buy several of both the black-colored heavy-tension and red-colored medium-tension GripMaster hand exercisers? I like to give them as gifts because I often find that both avid outdoorsy athletes and health-conscious people alike do not realize the benefits of exercising your hands/forearms along with the other parts of your body.
If you search 'rock climbing' this is the top of the list. This product is a gimmick, its unique, and interesting, but it does not help in any way when it comes to climbing. I also play guitar and I see a lot of reviews saying it helps with their finger strength... maybe so, but you're not practicing guitar while you do it!
Bottom line:
Build climbing strength by climbing
Build finger strength for guitar by playing guitar
So I originally purchased : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UMFT22/ref=oh_details_o03_s02_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And I liked it so much, but decided I wanted a little more resistance in it, so I found this model made by Prohands as well, and this was listed as heavy tension, compared to my current medium tension unit.
Upon arrival, not only it is smaller than the 1st one, it is a joke tension wise compared to my medium tension unit! Only differences I can tell between the 2 units units besides size are the sizes of the springs and the medium unit has "PRO" on it.
I have mixed feelings about this product, I do not have big hands, but I find it too small/thin, which makes it uncomfortable, in addition, I think it breaks in too quick, I bought the black/heavy tension, first day it was great, hard to do 30-40 rep sets, by the third day, I could handle it without problems, I doubt I got strong so quick, it takes a few days, not literally 2 days!
In any case, that is why I am not giving it a low or high rating, just in the middle, i recon it does somehow helps in strengthening your fingers and forearm.
