A world robbed of the Internet? We probably can't imagine what it would be like. Even Amazon reviews would disappear. David Nicholls has given his readers something serious to consider, and wrapped it in a mystery. What I found so interesting is there are no "good guys," but a series of flawed characters make the story evolve. It's a fun read and a compelling topic. It will get you thinking.

I enjoyed reading this book. Fair warning for those who object, this book has a couple of graphic sex scenes in it. As a Christian, I do not care for such. But these scenes are part of the story and relatively short, so are easy to skip.

However, it is an interesting premise for a book. What would happen in the world if a cyber-terrorist found a way to shut down the internet. The book could have used a little more description of the havoc this would cause, but the author does a fairly good job of presenting what would happen.

The premise of someone completely shutting down the internet permanently is intriguing. I believe many people have a love/hate relationship with technology. The ending scenario was a bit surprising and made me chuckle that I should have seen it coming.

The writing, on the other hand, was immature, in my opinion. Especially since according to the writer's bio he is a professional writer.

The missing words I blame on the editor and the proof-reader(s). But the complete misuse of certain words, e.g. Invisage, is sloppy. I picked up on the writer being British early on, but British grammar and American grammar aren't that dissimilar. There were many passages that were strained and contrived and the overarching sense one got was that the writer didn't know the subject matter very well and didn't have an intimate relationship with his characters.

Overall it was an interesting idea and I had to see how the writer brought it all to a close. The writing made it a somewhat less than enjoyable read.

David Nicholls' novel Outernet is a book that makes you wonder what would really happen if the world-wide internet was suddenly non-functional. Though it is a work of fiction, it shows just how vulnerable we all would be if a virus infected computers throughout the world. In it, a multi-billionaire media mogul who is not ready to move into the world of technology wants to destroy the internet. Though his company is losing money, he refuses to bow to the technology that has encompassed the way the media does its business. He hires a young computer genius who has just been released from prison to invent a virus that will shut the internet down. He had made plans before hand to insure that his media empire not only comes out on top but is making money hand over fist. He is suddenly a friend to heads of state around the world and especially the president of the United States. Nicholls' book starts out a little slow as he sets the stage for the characters and the plot. When that is finished things begin happening fast to bring it all together, building up to an exciting climax involving murder and mayhem.

Intriguing and fascinating story line. What would happen if we lost the Internet? You have to read this story to find out. This story had action, murder, romance, conspiracies, and an interesting twist at the end. I appreciated that the story wasn't bogged down with Internet and computer-hacking minutiae so that I my kept reading one page to the next...and then to the next page...and then to the next page.

I highly recommend this book.

The plot could very well happen, but with electronics they way they are nowadays, i don't think it would take too long to be up and running again. Excellent story and characters!

The idea is that a bad guy destroys the Internet for picque and profit. I got this book to see if/how it could be done, but they never said. It turns into your standard heroes being chased by bad guys story, like so many others. Could be made into a movie, but they would probably have to inject some technology into it to make it plausible, even for a thriller.

Somebody had to write it. The possibility that the internet could be compromised to the extent that it no longer exists was a story waiting to be written. D.P. Nicholls has done this so successfully without taking the reader into a massively complicated story line involving technical explanations of how it could be achieved.
The way in which he combines the intrigues of commerce with the incredible ability of the back bedroom hacker and what can happen when they have a common aim reveals an absolute mastery of the written word.
Be not afraid dear reader, all is well in the end, as it should be, but it's how he takes you there and although some may see the end coming, it still takes you by surprise. A little masterpiece which would make a great movie.
The rather juicy romantic inclusion was also quite delightful. A liitle bit of life in the raw is never amiss, anywhere.

What happens when someone wants to turn the internet off?

This was a good technothriller, not too much techno and quite a bit of thriller.

I rather enjoyed this.
