I received one of the first copies of this CD, soon after it went on sale in August, 2010, and have listened to it many times since! Most of the songs hold up extremely well to repeated listening, in much the same way that Diana Gabaldon's books can be read over and over again. My favorites are "I am Ready", "Could I Surrender My Heart", "Is tu fuil o' mo chuislean" (a lovely version of the blood vow from Jamie and Claire's wedding, sung in Gaelic by two young Scottish girls), "Such a Fool", and the very emotionally intense and powerful "Say the Words", a duet between Jamie and Black Jack Randall, set during Jamie's ordeal at Wentworth Prison.
The performers do an excellent job, and I was particularly impressed with Allan Scott-Douglas, who sings the part of Jamie. He has an amazing range of emotional expression, and in my opinion he "gets" Jamie Fraser pretty well. (Diana Gabaldon has said he resembles Jamie physically as well, and has gone so far as to suggest him as a possible candidate to play Jamie in any future OUTLANDER movie or miniseries. Take a look at the pictures of him at the top of this listing and see what you think.Read more ›
Oh! but that changed once you hear the magical voices of Allan-Scott Douglas and Sue Robertson. Also need to make a special mention on Ross Croll because let me tell you, this CD is absolutely spectaular.
I have pretty much listed to nothing else since I received my copy fresh from Scotland!
The song "Safe" by Sue (Claire) brings me to tears because you can picture the book scenes matching with the song. The writer/composer was in Claire's head when he wrote this song.
"I Am Ready" by Allan (Jamie) is probaly my next favorite song. It is very catchy and perfect for the scene. Allan's voice is amazing.
*Say the Words" is hauntingly beautiful. Chills my friends. Chills!!
I could review all the songs but seriously, if you are fan of Outlander, you have to have this CD.
As a longtime fan of the Outlander series and of Scottish/Irish folk music, as well as a little bit of a Broadway snob - okay, I admit it, I admit it! - I did purchase this CD with a few expectations. I wasn't expecting a full-scale Broadway score, but the two expectations I did have in order to be satisfied by this purchase were: 1) It had to stay faithful to the characters of Outlander, and 2) It had to leave me wanting to listen to it again, at least at some point. I wasn't really satisfied on either point, which I will address in detail below.
1: I was not happy with how they handled Claire's motives. In the novel, she did NOT want to marry Jamie. She did NOT fall in love with Jamie until after the wedding. And she certainly didn't know how strongly Jamie felt about her at first - not until he gave her the wedding ring, and the full breadth of it didn't hit her until they were at Lallybroch. All of these premises are stomped on in "Could I Surrender My Heart?" and "Such a Fool."
While the closing lines of the novel left me with goosebumps, the closing lines of the musical induced a facepalm. In the musical, Jamie just got done telling her they'd be living like fugitives, in poverty, etc -- which Claire happily agrees to. Then she adds as an afterthought that there would be three of them. It rings false, makes her sound like she's perfectly OK with raising a child while sleeping in a haystack, etc. As the musical closed I wasn't feeling warm and fuzzy. My thoughts were more along the lines of: "Huh?Read more ›
