**GOLD MEDAL WINNER, 2017 ILLUMINATION AWARDS**

Jacqueline Bussie knows that too many Christians live according to unspoken "laws" that govern the Christian life: #1: Never get angry at God; #2: Never doubt; #3: Never question; #4: Never tell your real story; #5: Always speak in clichés about evil and suffering; and #6: Always believe hope comes easy for those who truly love God.
Living according to these rules is killing real Christian life;
Outlaw Christian proposes a rebellious, life-giving, authentic alternative. Through captivating stories and with disarming honesty, Bussie gives concrete, practical strategies to help readers cultivate hope, seek joy, practice accompaniment, compost their pain, and rediscover the spiritual practice of lament. Tackling difficult questions without political divisiveness, Bussie speaks to both progressive and conservative Christians in ways that unite rather than divide. And in doing so, she provides a new way to handle the most difficult and troubling questions of life in a broken world that God will never abandon.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A solid exhortation to live outside the sphere of hackneyed holiness...Excellent exegeses...authentic insights...Bussie piles on stories of hope to countermand lies such as 'nothing ever changes'...Bussie writes with poetry, pathos, and pepper."-Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"There's nothing fluffy about this book. It is raw, sassy, and from the heart...This is a fresh invitation to the faith for skeptics, doubters, seekers, and even folks who like that old-time-religion. Become an outlaw Christian. God likes holy rebels." -Shane Claiborne, author of
The Irresistible Revolution, Jesus for President, and the new book Executing Grace

"Reading
Outlaw Christian was like having a late-night conversation with a dear friend. The experience is filled with deep confessions, refreshing honesty and new grace. I hope readers take away the same thing I did -- a rekindled love for the God who finds us and frees us." -Sarah Thebarge, author of The Invisible Girls

"Dr. Jacqueline Bussie has written this book for those Christians who crave the honest Gospel, stripped of deceptive prettiness and unreal promises; one that acknowledges our pain, welcomes our doubts, legitimizes our anger and insists that only when we are able to witness to the entire truth of our lives can we truly understand what the Good News means for us and for the world. Outlaw Christian invites us to step out of bounds again and again in search of an authentic faith with the end result being that we encounter our most authentic self." - Paul Raushenbush, Huffington Post Executive Editor of Global Spirituality and Religion

"While this is a Christian book, its gifts are available to anyone who has ever wrestled with the seemingly impossible task of making sense of suffering, loss, evil, inequity, and loneliness--including atheists like me. Reading Dr. Bussie's call to reject clichés and sit with uncertainty, I found myself hoping this book makes its way into the hands of every Christian who has ever had their questions or pain shut down by a platitude or an easy answer." --Chris Stedman, author of
Faitheist and Executive Director of the Yale Humanist Community

"I served as a parish pastor for twenty five years.Walking with my people in times of crisis and deep pain I came to realize that some of their deepest struggles were not about loss nor about making sense out of what had happened, but finding the space within themselves and within their faith communities to speak honestly and openly about their doubt and anger toward God. Now Jacqueline Bussie, a theologian of the church, shares her experience and gives voice to all who have been caught in the belief that doubt is faithlessness and anger toward God is blasphemy. Quite the opposite, Dr. Bussie argues, doubt and anger are real expressions of a living faith. Outlaw Christian might break the rules but it opens up the possibility of deeper faith." -The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, Presiding Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

I have the great privilege to be a student of Jacqueline's and can ...
In Outlaw Christian, Dr. Jacqueline Bussie writes for hurting souls by openly sharing her own scars and lessons learned about faith, life, and compassion. I have the great privilege to be a student of Jacqueline's and can attest to her genuine vulnerability. This book is MUST read and is perfect for anyone dealing with depression, loss, or hurt. To be an Outlaw Christian myself for a moment, I will share that just a few years ago I was diagnosed (rather late) with a rare genetic disorder that has changed my life in so many ways. Although the last few years have been extremely difficult, Jacqueline was and still is someone I can count on to share openly with my emotions, hurts, joys, and deep sorrows. She is the epitome of an Outlaw Christian and leads by example by writing this wonderful piece of literature. A raw, real faith is the only kind of faith I choose--Jacqueline's book is the realest I know. You are truly missing out if you don't buy.

This book was great! It challenged me and made me really think about God, life, faith, hope...everything. It was so freeing to read that there are others out there who think and feel like I do. Who are confused, saddened or outraged by some of the things that go on in this world. This is a life altering book and full of quotes that are stunning. Here's an example, she's talking about how we always try to find words to say to others who are suffering in some way when really there are no words. "Human beings have a billion and a half heartbeats to use in this life, and I propose that you use yours to hear someone else's." She also says that when we are struggling/in pain, it's difficult to find the right words to express our sadness or grief. "Language is an inadequate means on its own to share with one another what it means to be our human selves, which is why we communicate also through tears and laughter." I would encourage everyone to read this book whether you call yourself a Christian or not. It's not "preachy" or condemning but...I can't put it into words other than to say, YES that's how I feel too! She tells stories and quotes people of other beliefs/religions and states we can learn so much from each other (even those of other faiths) if we just take the time to LISTEN! We need to commit ourselves to finding joy and hope in our everyday lives. It's there, everywhere if we stop, look and listen.

I heard a quote the other day on the radio that, “Authenticity is the new cool!”
If that is the case, then Jacqueline, is the “poster child” for the “New Cool.”
And her Book Outlaw Christian; It’s handbook!

This book has been such a gift to me on so many levels. The stories, speak truth all on their own. But brought together in this book, they become life-giving! I regularly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, who will listen. It has given me so much strength and hope. And it has helped my family and I through the unexpected death of my brother.

Reading this book has deeply impacted my life, more than these words could ever express. As a Dyslexic, reading a whole book is a challenge. Reading can be slow, arduous, and literally painful at times. But, I intentionally, took my time, reading and “sitting with,” the stories and “living under the roof” of this book. It took me six months and six days. And, now I own it in multiple formats; so that, I can revisit these questions, stories, and connections, to the “Both/And;” time and time again. And, to keep Hope alive and for “Composting Pain.” For God is LOVE, and the sure and certain Hope, in Jesus Christ. I am truly grateful for Jacqueline Bussie and this book.

Truly, take your time with this book, and love its Hope, as life-giving “resistance.” You won’t be disappointed!

Curious about the following expressions: composting pain, steward of suffering, radical listening, hope sleuth and shedding secrets? If so, buy this book! If not, buy it anyway! Then, buckle up for the ride of your life.

I consider myself a reasonably awake, believing Christian yet while reading this book, it was as if I'd taken The Red Pill (think Matrix) and started seeing a whole new reality. Scales came off and so did the shackles. Some anyway. Dr. Bussie's words not only liberate but challenge, affirm and inspire. Her truth telling is beyond refreshing- it's deeply necessary. For our culture...for our world. She is clearly a scholar yet writes a surprisingly accessible book. The biggest compliment I can give is upon finishing, I wanted to reread it immediately. This time, highlighter in hand.

It has been said that the glory of God is man - and woman - fully alive. It doesn't matter if you're disenfranchised, disconnected, disbelieving, doubting or somewhere else in a different pattern of alliteration, this book will set you on a path to full aliveness. And it may just launch you there.

I sent the following email to Dr. Bussie and she replied!!:
I know I am a complete stranger but I couldn’t help writing you about your book. I discovered it by doing the 5 day devotional on my bible.com app. I immediately bought the book and have just finished chapter 1. It is BRILLIANT. Already. You’re asking the questions that I have always wanted to ask but was always afraid to do for fear of ridicule or becoming an outcast. I can’t wait to read more. I hope to introduce this book to my men’s group as a topic of study for us. The group is all about telling the truth to each other and not being afraid to share what we’re really feeling. I have held back my true feelings about a lot of things because I didn’t want to seem weird. I have a feeling your book will help me have the courage to share what’s really on my heart instead of just giving “safe” answers.

Thank you in advance for the rest of the book.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I am deeply moved by the honesty in this book. On the other, I am disturbed about God Almighty being labeled as not omnipotent. One of His names, is El Shaddai listed in Genesis, Jeremiah and other places in the Bible.

There is no satisfactory theodicy I have come across, yet explaining God's goodness and all powerfulness and why evil exists at all. Of note, lacking in this book is the mention of the evil one, the Acuser of Mankind (John and 1,2, and 3 John), Satan who tempted Adam and Eve to believe his lies. Adam and Eve believed his lies over God's truth and the world we have is a result from that. Does that explain evil? Not entirely ad nor is the Bible meant too. Mind you the existence of God isn't defended like Christians feel the need to today, He simply exists, has existed from no beginning and will always exist.

Anyway this book at least does not fully present the case for believing God despite evil it always does not mention that hope, love, truth and good will one day exist without despair, hate, apathy, lies, and evil (Revelation) because Jesus Christ who now gives hope through suffering will one day come again. Without repentance from sin, leading to resurrection there is no hope now or into eternity.
