This book, which is written in clear, understandable prose, powerfully demonstrates why radical thinkers such as Badiou, Zizek, and Agamben call Paul their contemporary. Paul's epistle to the Romans is often used a club by the institutions of Christianity against the marginalized and oppressed. However, Jennings shows how Romans can be a handbook for revolutionary thinkers.

This is a book that I will be giving to friends and coming back to again and again.

Justice outside the law. Love it. Great corrective for Western Christianity in is to often assumption and practice of a Christianity that presumes, at the cause of much suffering, to absolutely represent the will of Heaven.

This is an important contribution and intervention to contemporary debate and discussion on the legacy of Paul/Pauline thought to what Zizek calls as radical politics against Empire. Not only a first-rate theologian, prolific biblical scholar but also an interested political thinker, Theodore W. Jennings Jr offers here a reflection that puts Paul in the company of political thinkers whose interest is above all a politics of the All, one that which animates justice; and makes a persuasive case that Paul has a lot to offer than what contemporary radical thinkers of the Left (Badiou, Zizek, Agamben, et al) has so far presented him to be. Moreover, following his work on Reading Derrida/Thinking Paul [Stanford], he unchains Paul from the ecclesiastical prison that has for so long made Paul a mouthpiece of reactionary politics of the institutional church--and the academe! Here (and there), Paul is a radical and revolutionary militant agent not of the church but of the crucified messiah.

Above all, what Jennings has done to Romans demonstrates that indeed this letter of Paul to the "people in Rome" remains to be what Augustine and Luther had thought it is: a radical text that provokes a different way of thinking and hence a different way of being and doing in the world. Only this time, Jennings shows that this text is not only for the church people but for all agents who takes up the work of salvation and redemption of All.
