Fun, very tiny cubes
Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020
The cubes are nice visually, but they are very tiny and melt quickly; it's also somewhat tedious to remove them from the tray. They don't slide out like the large cubes in similar soft, bendy trays. They would be good for parties if you have a lot on hand.
Three small sized ice cubes are very convenient. I'm not sure why but this tray makes flawless (no bubbles or imperfections in the ice) cubes compared to previous plastic tray I owned.
For those desiring to use this tray for actual ice, take a moment to peruse the previous reviews and note that half the folks are utilizing the tray for garlic or herb prep/freezing. For this purpose it appears to succeed quite well. But as a gal whose ice maker recently went bust, but who failed to read the reviews, this tray is a giant miss. First, it's cute--should the appearance of your freezer accessories be a make it or break it deal. Probably not. But it's worth noting because when I received the tray I actually let out a wee girly squeal. I love ice, I eat ice like it's a required food group, and I go through a LOT of it. Just ask my dentist. So the first strike goes against me as I didn't pay close enough attention to the dimensions. It's tiny!! It makes enough ice for 2 regular drinks....1 drink if you're greedy OR pouring a warm beverage. This teeny ice cannot withstand your freshly brewed tea, just sayin'. Melt city.
I have fully embraced the silicone trend in kitchen ware so I was expecting the same brilliant function from this hex tray. Alas, the ice is just waaay too difficult to remove. I don't feel like having a big debate or holding my tongue just right to deliver ice from a tray to my glass. Nope. So because there's so little of it, because it's hard to pop out, and because my old hard plastic trays are, I begrudgingly admit, far superior in every way, it's with a heavy heart that I recommend skipping this. It's too pricy for what your getting (and will make your rectangle cubes feel so square), and though I appreciate it's dishwasher safe, even the 'wait 90 seconds' rule after removing from the freezer doesn't help out the Hex. I also purchased some new standard size Rubbermaid trays, sold here on Amazon, and for an equally frozen water based product with less hassle for removal, they blow this guy outta the water. Sure, it's boring old hard white plastic. But it works.
This tray is only for super hard core fans of 6 sided things. Tho personally feel it fails even for novelty purposes. But if you have patience, only need teeny ice a few times a week, and like to keep a hipster freezer compartment, by all means. Oh, and apologies for the geometry humor.
I bought this tray not for the purpose of making ice but for the purpose of using it for scented soy wax melts and so my review will reflect my experience with WAX.
I bought these because I wanted to try my hand at a different way to make wax tarts and these I thought were adorable and the perfect size when it came to smaller wax/tart warmers. Each cell is small [5mL] but this is what I was aiming for and after the wax hardened the small trays made it easy to stack in the freezer. The silicone tray made it easy to pop the frozen/hard wax from the cells and clean up was a cinch. Because it's silicone it did hold onto some of the oil scent but it was easily done away with when I used a separate cleaner other than my dishwashing tab [and yes you can toss these babies right in the dishwasher!]
Very useful and inexpensive when it comes down to using a clamshell container vs loose "honeycomb" pieces - this is so much cheaper than continuously buying bigger bundles of the clamshells. Not only cost effective but better for the environment, too.
i have three little dogs. all rescues. all came to my sickly and skinny. they all ate voraciously and i was concerned about them getting the bloat. i tried some by-design dishes but none of them were well suited to smaller dogs. these silicone hex trays are great for this. been using them for over 5 years with no issues.
This ice tray is perfect for my needs. I have a very full refrigerator, and the standard ice cube trays tend to take up an entire shelf in the refrigerator door. This tray takes up about half the space. The hexagons are about 1 inch across, and I don't have any trouble getting them out of the tray. I just pop them out directly into a glass.
The trick I use for filling it is I fill it up over the sink, and then lay if flat on the palm of my hand to bring it to the freezer. There is a little bit of spilling, but not too much. I'm going to order another 1-2 of these trays and fill them up and stack them on top of each other and put them in the freezer door. This way, I will have to feel them less often. I think these trays are well made they look like they will last a long time. They are also easy to clean. When it first arrived, I got a large bowl and I put soap and water in it. I then dipped the tray in the water, and used my fingers to clean out all the "honeycombs." Cleaning this ice tray was easier than traditional trays because the plastic is flexible. All around, it's a great product :)
If you are buying to use to make ice cubes, you may want to think twice, as this is very small and would only provide enough ice for possibly 2 beverages - - - a waste of time for that purpose. However, for my purposes, it is perfect. Each cube is almost exactly one teaspoon in volume. I freeze grated ginger, tomato paste, chopped garlic and chopped fresh herbs. After freezing, I pop out of the tray and into ziplock freezer bags to have handy whenever I need for cooking. I started with one tray for garlic however, after trying everything I can think of to try to get the smell out, I ended up buying 2 more. I have labeled one tray for garlic, one for ginger, and the other one I use interchangeably for tomato paste and spices. I am a huge fan of using these trays - - - the tsp size is versatile, the cubes pop out easily, and except for holding onto the aroma of what's been frozen in it, it washes and cleans up very easily.
Perfect for anything you need smaller ice cubes for- water bottles, etc. It feels as though it's good quality and, after using it for a few months, I have zero complaints. I would buy again.
Make sure that you want the small ice cubes before you buy this.
By the negative reviews, I was really getting worried. This is great, just want I wanted, small ice similar to crushed ice size, I plan on freezing a bunch and putting them in a bowl, so this would work well for that. Updates to follow.
