Set in the western highlands of Scotland, we meet Kristie, a woman by all accounts who has endured so much over the years that it has turned her heart to stone in a way. Her brother has gone off fishing leaving the woman -Kristie and her very pregnant sister-in-law Jean to tend to the croft, only when a bad storm hits and the men don't return does Kristie go to the shores of the Loch in search for them. Only she found more than she bargained for. On the beach she finds a man, a very naked man!
Fearing the man could be a reiver or worse--an Englishman, Kristie is against tending to the man but she takes him to the croft and dumps him with the horse. When the very handsome and mysterious man wakes up he has no idea who is or where is from, and much to Kristie's relieve he is most definitely not an Englishman!
Kristie neighbour Jock takes a liking to the man and names him Creag, the man also takes a liking to Jock and the two become friends whilst he is recovering in the barn. Jock is a story teller and once he tells Creag the tales of Selkies - seals who can shed their skin and live as men/woman on land, he begins to experience dreams and visions, ones that don't make much sense to him as first but as his relationship with Kristie grows and trust is built between them, he feels the calling of the water.
Only once he goes to the water does he remember who & what he is, and how he came to be stranded on the beach. He is harbouring a terrible secret and fears that all he has built with Kristie will be lost.
Can Kristie break down her defences and let him after she learns his true identity and what he has done? You really need to pick up this book and the whole series, I promise you will not be disappointed!
This book has been my favourite of the series, not only because it is set in my homeland, but because yet again Natasha has done an amazing job at research in the Selkie Myths and Scotland.
For all this has a content warning, this is very much a clean shapshifter book compared to most others, which makes this a welcome change to this genre of books.
I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
Kristie is widowed and living with her brother, Domnall, and his pregnant wife, Jean on their farm. There is extreme worry for Domnall and his friend who are late returning from a fishing trip, along with the enormous backlog of work that has yet to be done on the farm. Kristie, on searching for her brother, ends up finding an unclothed injured man on the shores, an outsider, who doesn't seem to know who or where he is. They take him in to aide his recovery and he soon starts to help them out on the farm while Domnall is still missing. He starts to make a close connection with Kristie and a friendship with loveable young Jock, who lives with his aunt and uncle in the farm next door.
Jock's father died in battle, he believes his mom to be living in the ocean as a 'selkie', a grey seal who looks for love as a human form but the call of the ocean is always so strong it wins out. Obviously everyone thinks this is one of the youngsters well thought out stories but there could be so much more truth in this than everyone believes.
Who is this outsider and what has happened to Domnall and his friend? Is there a connection or just pure coincidence?
Another fascinating tale to escape into from this author, it pulled me in and towards the end had my heart fluttering wondering what would happen. I really enjoy the flow of the authors writing which just enhances the story. Outsider left me feeling happy and lucky to have been able to read it. Next please!!
This is the first book I've read in Shapeshifter Sagas. I hadn't heard of a selkie before so I was a little intrigued.
Poor Kristie has had a rough life. She's been living with her brother and sister-in-law ever since her husband was killed in a war. She had a baby but the girl died when she was only 6 months old. Now her brother is missing after going out to sea to fish with a neighbor. She and her pregnant sister-in-law, Jean, are scared but hopeful that they'll find their way home.
Then a naked man, an outsider, shows up on the beach near their home. Kristie wants to just leave him but Jean insists that they bring him home and give him some food and clothing and a place to recover if he survives.
The relationship between Kristie and the outsider is a fun one to read about. She has no intention of ever getting married again but she's attracted to him. I enjoyed how he likes to get her riled up by making sarcastic remarks.
I like the author's writing style. It flows well and draws a vivid picture of the surroundings. She also captures to an extent what it would have been like living back then, such as leaving a person's body in the home while neighbors come to give their respects (and the smell of that body after a day or two) or how much hard work was involved in just surviving.
I definitely recommend Outsider if you enjoy historical romance, especially if you like a touch of fantasy.
