The book is split into multiple categories. From leadership & technology, to social media & design, it gives a summary with multiple perspectives for each area - a taste & see. Read what you want.
While having over 60 authors could have been catastrophic, it really does work, and made it fun to read. Each author has a brief essay within their field of expertise. The editors did a good job of keeping the essays brief & on point. Each essay also ends with the author's website & twitter. Very cool.
Each main category was covered in an inspirational, "think different" soft of way (I felt inspired). However, it could have used more practical application. The application they did offer could either be found in any modern marketing book, or applied mainly to churches with a Sunday morning focus. There must be ways to communicate "the greatest story ever told" outside of basic marketing techniques & Sunday services. Plus, with how fast technology is advancing, I'm afraid the book is going to be dated in five years.
Finally, of all the diverse categories, I feel they left out a crucial one: Theology. My concern here is that most people that end up in church communication didn't go to seminary. They studied their craft, and decided to use it for God. Then they lean on their pastors for the deep stuff (Speaking from experience here). There are many believers that don't need better methods, but a more accurate message.
Some questions that could be answered in this section are: How should hearing from God impact our creativity & technology? What are Biblical examples of good & bad communication, and the results? How should my heart for God overflow into my work, when my heart is mostly messy?
Overall, Outspoken is an inspiring book and many will likely benefit from it. It definitely makes me want to be more clear & excellent in my communication. I highly respect all the authors for what they do. Thanks for being outspoken.
That said, each of the 60 communication experts gave very good advice and churches of any denomination would be wise to read this book. As a graphic designer and churchgoer, I see first hand how religious organizations fail to communicate their message because of ignorance, lack of budget, or lack of time. Outspoken addresses each of these issues. It points out why they're not valid excuses, and how to work around them.
