Peter takes us on a wild ride of assignments from the South Pole to the Amazon to Mogadishu to Baghdad, and also prompts a rattlesnake to spit venom on his microphone.
--SCOTT SIMON, HOST OF NPR’S WEEKEND EDITION SATURDAY
Ever wonder what kind of people helped build NPR into the revered media institution it is today? Peter Breslow's rollicking memoir pulls back the curtain on what it took to make radio from the farthest reaches of the world.
--RACHEL MARTIN, NPR HOST
National Public Radio wasn’t always the journalistic treasure it is today. And Peter Breslow wasn’t always a multi-Peabody Award winner. Thankfully for NPR junkies, their paths crossed in 1982 when both were young, and they grew up together over the decades. In his memoir Outtakes, senior producer Peter Breslow reveals how NPR moved from a niche listening experience to become one of the world’s preeminent news organizations.
We are alongside Peter in the front seat as he travels the planet reporting –from Kabul to Kathmandu and from the earth’s highest point--Mt. Everest—to its lowest—the Dead Sea. Outtakes takes us behind the scenes covering history-defining breaking news and producing award winning programs like All Things Considered and Weekend Edition.
Packed with absurd hijinks, hilarious missteps and breathtaking close calls, Outtakes is a must read for NPR fans, journalists of all ages and people interested in enthralling audio storytelling.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2024Outtakes is a great read, written as a series of anecdotes pulled from Breslow’s amazing 39-year NPR career. His travels all over the planet – from Mt. Everest to Antarctica – are fascinating and presented with a self-deprecating sense of humor that is often hysterically funny. As a bonus, we learn a lot of inside baseball details about how news radio shows are produced. My only complaint is that the book is not twice as long.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2024The author is funny, authentic and provides an inside close-up of the life on the road of a first class journalist! As he traveled the world for NPR he relates the challenges of collecting the detail and heart of the story, while describing the challenges of the people and events he and his team were covering. Filed with humor, compassion and insight. Don’t miss this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2024Peter Breslow spins some great yarns, looking back on a career chasing stories for NPR for the better part of his life. Doing journalism at home and abroad for a highly respected outfit like NPR is mind opening and Peter gives the reader a sense of what that life is like. Funny, poignant and entertaining, I recommend this book to fans of NPR.

His great writing and terrific sense of humor will have you turning the pages at a clip.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2023Peter, I thought I knew a lot about you but this shows me there was much more. My stressful IT career even when hospitals being able to help patients was on the line make my adventure just a causal stroll whistling Dixie compared to your literally dodging bullets and risking your life. Thanx for getting it out my dear friend. It was a hellofa wild and fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2024My friend of over 60 years was always a great story teller. Now after reading “Outtakes” I’m surely convinced it remains true. What an interesting and adventurous life and career at NPR he had. Read this book, you will enjoy it! - Michael Padua , one of the Jersey Boys.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024When I listen to NPR, I'm presented with a clear, composed narrative that seems so measured and deliberate. In his book, Breslow gives the reader a fascinating behind-the-scenes view of an upstart new organization reporting on evolving high-risk stories that make up what I think of as "the news". A fascinating and funny read for any NPR or adventure journalist fan!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024Not only did Peter Breslow pack a lot of excitement into a career as a radio producer, his wanderings as a world traveler also produced a lot of entertaining story material. Whether you're interested in journalism or not, you'll enjoy every page of Outtakes. Read it.
