My favorite part of the vest is the handle. I take her out paddle boarding with me, and one day while we were in the middle of the lake where the water is smooth like glass, she decided to jump in (thinking it was land, and not water!). I panicked, because she was scared of swimming at that time. I leaped off the paddle board after her and easily pulled her out of the water and on the board with the handle. It's also very easy to pick her up and put her back where I need her on the board when she starts to fidget too much.
My least favorite part that could use some improvement is the flotation device under the chin. I wish it was a little more flexible so I could wrap it around a little easier, and I wish it was softer. It just seems to firm to be that close to her throat.
Overall, it's a fantastic life vest, and I'd recommend it to anyone!
If you look at different sizes and colors you find there are different pictures and three sizing charts or pictures depending on which size color combo you pick. One pic shows a tape measure around the dogs neck and chest. Another pic shows a chart with height and weight and the third pic, the best pic, shows the vest laid out flat with measurements. I found that all three sizing pics match each other and the one laid out flat really cleared things up for me.
So for example I thought I'd need an XS based upon the two sizing charts. They show a chest size of 15"-19". However a look at the laid out pic shows the max width to be about 20". That means there won't be any overlap for the Velcro to secure and the chest straps will likely not snap on dogs with a 19" chest, like mine. The pic makes it obvious that that you'll need about 3-4" of overlap. That pretty much means add 3-4" to your dogs chest measurements and then pick a size based upon that number. Of course the larger the dog the larger the amount of overlap could be.
If you also look at the laid out flat pic you can get a feel for the length of the vest from collar to tail and with some effort guesstimate the diameter of the neck floats. For example I guesstimated the small size to have a neck opening of 10-14", perfect for my dogs.
My dogs fell at the upper limit of the XS size so I took everyone's advice and firmed up my decision after looking the pics and ordered size Small for my 16lb Havanese. I'll update soon with how they fit.
First, our dogs had a blast swimming between the two canoes and the handle made it easy to lift them up out of the water without tipping over. They are a little bulky but I would expect that from a good life jacket. I follow the measurements and actually measured the dogs. They fit perfectly. Our dogs had no problem swimming with them and actually got used to it. They would just sit there and float lol.
At one point, we got caught in some fast water, hit a log and turned over. One dog jumps and was able to get to land but my wiener dog was stuff under the overturned canoe in rushing water. It took us a few tried to flip the canoe due to the water depth. It was horrifying. It felt like an internity. However, when we got the canoe turned over, she was just fine. Her head wasn't even wet. The life jacket kept her at the top of the canoe where the air pocket was. She did not inhale any water. Just a little stunned.
We could have easily lost her that day and I am convienced that the life jacket is what saved her!
(The handle did tear a little but from yanking her out of the canoe but I quickly replaced it. I won't go without one again!!)
She is put on the water often with us when we are paddling boarding or SUPing so it is nice to have her she and secure and an easy handle to grab onto if she jumps in.
