I have a 7 pound maltese and a 16 pound bichon. I ended up ordering a 'large' and my bichon loved it, but today I found a junior at a local store and bought that too.

Both sizes are ok for my bichon - at least she thinks so - but the 'large' works better. She has no problem carrying the larger log or getting the squirrels out. With the junior, she'll hoard the squirrels once they're out of the log (they're not small enough to be a choking hazard), but the log holes are smaller and it's harder for her to jam her face in there and pull them out.

With my maltese, it's just the opposite. She had no problem with the large squirrels and she had some fun dragging the larger log around the room, but the combination is too unwieldy for her. The junior is a perfect size.

I've included a few pictures, with a standard AA battery to scale.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot the same quality

I don’t normally write reviews as I try to research as much as possible, but that is also by way of including you helpful people who DO write reviews. That said, after purchasing this toy I was sadly disappointed. I had purchased the wonderful!!! Hide a hedgehog toy from Outward hound and it is fantastic. Made of durable fire hose material it although not the same, has lasted the test of time. I love the concept of these toys. My soft- mouthed golden retriever needs to be stimulated and loves to play. I mention the soft mouth because she’s not an aggressive chewer, even at 7 months. Loves the hidey holes and pulling things in and out. I just got this today, and within two hours she had ripped out all the holes. It is not made of the durable fire house materials, rather just another plush toy easily annihilated.. I did contact the manufacturer to suggest they keep both the concepts of the toy but also stick with the same durable material. She said she would pass it along. I have so enjoyed watching and playing with my dog with the hedgehog toy and was hoping for the same, but they are not even close in quality. I thank all of you people who have shown me, shared with me and instructed me that it IS important to write reviews. Thank you

4.0 out of 5 starsSo Much Fun!

I have a 1 year old pitbull mix who is a very strong chewer. I bought this after having read many many reviews knowing that it would probably be torn to pieces but that he would love it while it lasted. I was pleasantly surprised to find that with a little bit of supervision, this toy lasted a few months. He absolutely loves this toy!

The squirrels are the perfect size for him to hold in his mouth and carry around and they're a good size to toss around for a game of catch. If left to his own devices, he will absolutely shred this toy in about a minute. However, when we used it with him - by hiding the squirrels over and over and tossing them in the air for him to catch - and then put it away after playtime, they lasted quite a while. This toy will definitely not hold up to chewing but when used interactively and with supervision it's fun and will last a bit longer.

The squirrels have quite a few seams and are easy to tear apart. There's not really a whole lot of stuffing so not a huge mess but a mess nonetheless. The squeaker is just stuck in there with the stuffing with not extra reinforcement or protection so be aware of that if your dog likes to kill things that squeak. I really like that you can buy replacement squirrels and they're not that expensive.

The tree stump itself has generally held up well, although there is some tearing around the holes just from the dog shoving his nose in there over and over again. Some extra reinforcement around the openings would be wonderful and would make this last even longer.

Bottom line, I think most dogs would love this toy and if you're willing to supervise the play this should be a must buy. However, if your dog is a heavy chewer and you're looking for something you can leave out for them to play with at will, this is probably not the best choice.

5.0 out of 5 starsUnintended Consequence!!!

My son's yorkie poo stays at my place a lot, mostly because I take him to a nearby university campus, where, well-trained as he is, I can let him off-lead and chase squirrels to his heart's content. He is obsessed with squirrels now, so we thought this would be a fun Christmas toy for him. We followed the advice of other reviewers and supervised to try to delay the death of all the squirrels. We let him play with the tree trunk after he had rooted out all the squirrels and tried to kill them, as a dog will do. He loves the tree trunk -- so much so that he makes love to it every time we let him play with it. He is nearly five years old, and was neutered as a pup, and never was much for humping, but he goes after that tree trunk like a prisoner on a conjugal visit every time we set it out for him to play with. If we have guests, it's a floor show. He doesn't care. I'm not quite sure what to make of all this, but as long as it makes him happy . . . .

I just came here for the pictures. Really though, I bought this toy in February of 2016. I didn't leave a review because there are already thousands. But because my dog is still playing with the toy 2 years later, I figure the review could be of some use.

1. The tree has taken some damage and is a bit worn, but is still in working condition. Mostly Toby likes to shake it , and walk and run around with it in his mouth and play keep-away. Of course, when the squirrels are in it, all bets are off. Squirrels must die a horrible death, as all good doggies know.

2. The squirrels have taken hits--their seams and fabric aren't high quality. If Toby was a breed known for chewing, this would not be the toy for him. I give him chewing-appropriate toys; moose tines--this seems to have placated his needs. Again, though, he's a medium, low-key dog.

3. One thing I've noticed is that every dog toy gets mixed reviews. Dogs attack toys differently; none, little, moderate, and annihilate. Toby is able to handle plushies with moderate hit points. I reinforce toy seams when I get them and sew them up when they come apart. Needle and thread. Takes just a sec and almost no skill. The other thing one can do is buy squeakers inexpensively and replace removed ones. Again, simple needle and thread. It's cut our costs way down on toy replacement. By doing this, we still have Toby's puppy plushies, and he tore those things apart.

4. They do sell replacement squirrels for this product if yours get murdered. :)

This little toy is so cute. I bought it for my 10 week old mini-dashchund, Layla. I am glad it is smaller than what I thought, because Layla is tiny herself. When I unwrapped it, she was getting excited. I put it on the floor, she gabbed it and took off wth it. Lol. She is enjoying it! Highly recommend this toy!

4.0 out of 5 starsHad a blast dismembering the squirrels

Well my dog absolutely loved the toy. As soon as he saw it, he was obsessed --pulling the squirrels out, running around, chewing, and fetch. However, my dog loves to rip the seams on toys and the squirrels didn't last more than a day. He had a blast dismembering each and every one though. The "tree" has lasted about a month and he still loves playing with it, even without the squirrels. I've never seen him take to a toy as much as this one.

Lovely puzzle toy for my toy poodle puppy. She's 12 weeks old & very petite. She carries the whole toy around & chews the individual squirrels to make them squeak. I hide them back in their tree & she ferrets them out again. My boyfriend's cocker spaniel gets jealous & swipes a squirrel & my tiny Coco chases him down & reclaims it. I've also hidden treats in the tree trunk & she dives right in.
