A laboratory oven, sometimes called a heat-treating oven, is used in research, laboratory, metallurgical, and forensic applications. Lab ovens generally take one of three forms. A general-purpose gravity convection oven is used for drying, sterilizing, and heat treating. Reduced air flow in some models allows operators to use these ovens for lightweight items including film and powder. A laboratory vacuum oven uses a vacuum pump for heat-sensitive materials, electroplating, desiccating, and drying textiles. A thermal cycler is used in research and forensic science to perform DNA amplification using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Lab oven accessories can extend or complement processing. Things to consider when choosing a lab oven include the purpose, type of material being processed, and oven capacity.
