Not as fun as the Original Over the Hedge

I have two boys, only one of them ventured to try it, which was our 12 year old. He says that it's not very fun and it's kind of like a puzzle game, like a giant maze. The objective is to basically prank people. They aren't trying to get food or save a house, but rather it's just to hurt people. There's no story to it.

Within the maze there were things watching you that you had to be careful of. Some of the things they didn't like were Jack-O-Lanterns that would walk around. Overall, they just didn't care for this game as the original Over the Hedge.

So, bottom line is: My son does not recommend this game.

After completing the first Over the Hedge DS game (which was a fun game btw), I was curious to try out the sequel, Over the Hedge: Hammy Goes Nuts. Oh boy was I disappointed.

First of all, the gameplay is repetitive and only consists of you picking up objects and taking them somewhere else. Sure, the first Over the Hedge DS game did SOMETHING like this but at least that game involved platforming, strategy, planning, and precision, and most importantly, that game was fun. The characters are so slow and sluggish to control, and it totally killed my incentive to keep playing further. There are also no voice overs or even any grunts from the voice actors of the film, instead you get generic squeaks that sound nothing like them. The music is repetitive and mostly uninspiring, and there was one sound in particular that was grating, whenever you tip over a trashcan and it plays a super high-pitched ring sound that keeps playing over and over until all chip bags have finished spawning.

But that's not all. The game is filled to the brim with technical issues. Whoever programmed the 3D engine should be eaten by Vincent the Bear. The framerate is abysmal and it literally dips every time your character moves, and speeds back up when you stop moving. I assume it's because of either a) the floating green ring that appears when you touch the screen or b) the engine can't scroll fast enough to keep up with the movement (I think it's the latter). You'll also notice some crazy pop-ups at the edges of the touchscreen when the game tries to scroll through the pre-rendered backgrounds as well, which is unacceptable even by GAME BOY ADVANCE standards. There was one occasion where I was trying to break a pot with Hammy and then the game literally SKIPPED a ton of frames, like a scratched DVD. On the Vincent the Bear level during the getaway section, the music failed to play and I got so scared because I thought some creepypasta-like thing would happen, so I instantly ran to the exit. Most of these issues may seem minor on paper, but when you actually PLAY it for yourself, these issues will distract you and will ruin your experience even more.

Now, does the game have any POSITIVE points? Yes. The menus admittedly look really nice for the DS, using some FMVs in the main menu on the top screen to show dialogue, while the game also uses a notebook-like theme for the menus themselves, and overall it looks well done. The game also has quite a bit of replayability, you can revisit levels to steal items you previously couldn't steal due to the timer running low (if you even bother to considering how bad this game is). Even the overall concept of the game is mildly interesting, to say the least.

You have to use Hammy at first, then you have to collect about 15 chip bags scattered around the levels to use the other 3 characters, each requiring 5 chip bags: RJ the Raccoon, Verne the Turtle, and Stella the Skunk (previously not playable in the first game). There are also some "puzzles" you need to do for the first half of the level in order to enter the house. Then after that, do more "puzzles" to set a trap for the Exterminator. I am using the term "puzzles" lightly because they mostly involve picking up items and taking them somewhere else.
Lastly, there's the final section of each level where you have to steal as much collectibles as you can before the timer runs out. And if the timer runs out, the human (or sleeping Jack-O-Lantern named Jack-O, for some reason) wakes up. However, you can extend the time by collecting sheep throughout the level while doing the puzzles. Sadly though, the puzzles are repetitive and boring, and thus the slightly interesting concept was not very well executed. Throw in some more variety to the puzzles, give the characters unique abilities like the first game, make the characters less slow and sluggish, and maybe try making the puzzles more interactive? And while you're at it: FIX THE GODDANG FRAMERATE!!!

In conclusion, Over the Hedge: Hammy Goes Nuts is a bad game. A very bad game. It will bore you, it will depress you, and you will not be able to sleep. That was exactly the case for me, I literally woke up at 3 AM hugging my pillow in fear thinking about this terrible game. Do yourself a favor, do your kids a favor, do your frickin grandkids a favor. DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. GAME. Don't even bother donating it to charity, even that would be extremely cruel. The only place this game deserves to be is in the deepest pits of h3ll, or in the landfill with all the copies of E.T. on the Atari 2600. Now go buy the first Over the Hedge DS game, if you haven't already; THAT game is good. Score: 3/10
