After teaching Gail to ride her own, Terence suggested that they ride around the world on them. In 1987, they embarked from Santa Barbara to begin a five-year sojourn that included seeing the Berlin Wall come down, being shot at in Turkey, arrested for spying in the former Yugoslavia and robbed in Russia. If you love very different travel stories you will love this book! They are the memories of a 5 year trip on motor cycles through Europe and further afield on a budget, on a motor bike, visiting the highways and very bye ways of that land mass. Filled with wonderful and teeth clenching experiences, disasters and glories, descriptions of amazing cathedrals and mosques, stone cottages and 5 star eateries, wind and rain blown camp grounds and sun that makes the brain melt. The charming prose of Gail Lucas make light of what is clearly some hard to endure experiences that are offset by the warm and welcoming people who inhabit the passionate groups who love to travel, collect and repair Honda Goldwing motor cycles. A tour de force of endurance of the human spirit.

Anyone who has fantasized about taking off on a long adventure and leaving everything behind will find kindred spirits in this book. Five years on motorcycles, camping out, seeing Europe on an absolute shoestring -- these two adventurers lived that fantasy. Author Gail Lucas tells their tale with humor and aplomb. The author -- an actress, an artist and a singer and with no experience of motorcycles or camping -- took off with her much younger lover to "see the world." Terence -- a concert violist and violinist, a machine metal worker, with a knack for languages -- signed up with a mail-order law school, which he completed on a portable typewriter in campgrounds across Europe, returning after five years to ace the California Bar Exam. Lucas, who wrote detailed journals during their modern Odyssey, has edited those journals into a delightful book. You will feel like you are on the trip with them -- and begin fantasizing about the trip YOU have been putting off. A great read!
