White Wizzard released an EP last year (the excellent High Speed GTO), and subsequently lost every member except for bassist Jon Leon. Leon put together a new lineup, battle-tested them on the road opening for Korpiklaani, and put together a full-length album - Over the Top.
Over the Top is essentially 9 songs of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest worship, which is why it rules. There's a fierce (yet melodic) twin-guitar attack, very prominent Steve Harris-style bass, soaring dramatic vocals, and all the songs are about rocking in the night and battling for metal. The lyrics are beyond cheesy at times, but that only adds to their appeal. There's just a great NWOBHM meets Metal Massacre vibe to these songs that makes me like the album more each time I spin it.
If you're a fan of traditional heavy metal, it doesn't get much better than this. Between Over the Top, Icarus Witch's new album Draw Down the Moon and oh yeah a new Iron Maiden album, 2010 should be a banner year for traditional metal.
PS - I saw White Wizzard live earlier this year, and they put on a high-energy show. If you get a chance, check them out.
PPS - I know the split with the original members - who went on to form Holy Grail - wasn't exactly friendly, but the end result is two great metal bands. If you like White Wizzard, you'll want to check out Holy Grail's Improper Burial EP.
First because I can't stand reading reviews that don't know what they are talking about. Second this album deserves more stars.
First, WW is a true retro rock band and in no way even close to Steel Panther + Wildstreet. I have to ask..did you LISTEN to it..or did you just shoot off a review on the first few notes? I've listened to all genres of metal and Steel Panther could be considered a "joke" band. But WW is about as far from that music as the earth is to the sun.
So as much as I rarely listen to the really fundamental mindless jock rock (it has it's place) any good metalhead knows the difference between a creatively different (and retro) band like WW opposed to bands like Steel Panther.
There is no way Steel Panther or god-forbid Motley Crue could pull off the complexity and melody of this band. Anybody that thinks this hasn't really listened to it. FYI - It's called progressive, power, symphonic metal for a reason.
P.S. If you're also considering their "High Speed GTO" EP, listen to it on White Wizzard's myspace page first (click on the "Albums" tab in the player). I personally didn't get into it, as it's more like early 80's rock 'n' roll (e.g. REO Speedwagon).

I'm not sure I get the positive reviews this received. To me, it's cheesy. There are retro bands that sound perfectly relevant today (Pharaoh & Slough Feg come to mind), but this... Read morePublished on January 12, 2014 by old lifter
the sticker on the front said "recommended for fans of maiden+priest". Nope. Sorry, this is just another joke metal band like L.A.'s Steel Panther, or NYC's Wildstreet. Read morePublished on April 26, 2010 by guitarguy
If you like old school metal, stay away from this release.
