In my opinion, it is just what some may find jarring that makes this book special, namely, Dr. Martone's constant questioning the moral and ethical dimension of her experience with Michelle. . There in her darkest moments, uncertain whether her daughter will even survive her injuries, Dr. Martone is pondering the ethical dilemmas of signing "informed" consents which are not informed. Or the lack of equity in access to health care. Or the bizarre institution-centric logic of discharging (abandoning) the person when they have plateaued (stopped making progress), when all logic suggests that this is exactly the time when the survivor needs more and better care.
People who manage and work in "specialty care" centers for survivors with great and enduring needs will gain insight and hope that meaningful recovery from traumatic brain injury can continue for years. Further, and especially significant, while Michelle's journey may continue and she is a different person than she was before her injury, she brings love and joy to her family (along with many challenges). The questions and feelings Dr. Martone raises will strike a chord in others called to caregiving. Yes, this is a story of gaining consciousness. It is also a story about love.
