Editorial Reviews

Coming off her most successful album ever, Mandisa returns this August with her new studio album,'Overcomer'. Her previous album, 'What If We Were Real', has sold over 270,000 albums and featured the breakout radio hits 'Good Morning,' 'Waiting For Tomorrow,' and the #1 hit, 'Stronger.' The American Idol alum and two-time Grammy nominee continues to be a voice of encouragement and truth to women facing life's challenges. Mandisa also continues to have unprecedented media exposure for a Christian artist including two recent appearances on Good Morning America.

Mandisa seems to be one of the most accessible, down-to-earth, daring to be "real" artists making music today. (Just follow her on Facebook if you don't believe me.) In a delicate balance, her music tackles a wide variety of life's struggles and yet somehow manages to be uplifting and encouraging in the face of the storm. The true beauty of Mandisa's music is that she accomplishes this without falling into rote, Christian cliches that plague so many CCM artists, instead providing fresh musical conversations that are enjoyable and uplifting.

The opening track, "Overcomer" is fun pop music with a seriously substantive message: Whatever you're going through, YOU CAN DO THIS! (Who doesn't need to hear that every now and then?) It'll find its way onto many an exercise playlist, it SHOULD get wide radio play and possibly a Dove Award. It's that good. In the bouncy "Back To You", Mandisa dials back her normally powerful voice for a Jamie Grace-like pop-worship track. "Face 2 Face" features a goose-bumpy worship bridge that'll give you visions of heaven. She even ventures into gospel/R&B territory in "At All Times". If you purchse the "Deluxe Edition", you'll be treated to a great cover of "I Hope You Dance" (thankfully, you can purchse that one solo here: I Hope You Dance), and a couple of hyped-up remixes that'll work well in your Zumba class.

Worship, thankfulness, God's blessings, reliance on God's grace are all themes that permeate the entire record. There's not a single stinker on the album, and believe me, that is RARE. (Mandisa sure knows how to pick and present songs.) If you're looking for 45 minutes of pop-styled musical encouragement, "Overcomer" is a great choice.

Mandisa continues to be a voice of encouragement and truth to women facing life's challenges. She returns with her new album Overcomer on August 27th. Featuring the new single "Overcomer," the album's theme centers on the idea that there is hope in the midst of life's battles. That theme is a continuation of the empowering message from her hit song "Stronger." I've been married for 19 years and have 3 young daughters and this entire album really ministers to me and my family. I've seen how women in particular tend to beat themselves up about mistakes and feeling overwhelmed by life.

The opening songs, "Overcomer" and "Back To You" are very upbeat and catchy songs and Mandisa is a surefire GMA Dove Award nominee for female vocalist. I can't get enough of the biblical and worshipful chorus of "Overcomer"--"You're an overcomer / Stay in the fight `til the final round / You're not going under / `Cause God is holding you right now / You might be down for a moment / Feeling like it's hopeless / That's when He reminds You / That you're an overcomer." The song is such a great reminder that there is hope in Jesus, who tells us in John 16:33 (NIV): "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Amen to that!

"The Distance," "Press On" and "What Scars Are For" are all very vulnerable songs about accepting God's grace and forgiveness in the face of self-doubt. Stand out moments of this very solid album include the ultra-catchy dance tempo songs, "Face 2 Face" and "At All Times." These are relevant and catchy songs in any music format. I don't listen to much electronic dance music, as I'm more of a rock, contemporary and worship music listener, however the beats on this album are so engaging; this album is already in heavy rotation for me.

Overcomer is an awesome album. There are really no other words to describe it. By now you've heard the single but when you add worship songs like At All Times (my absolute favorite on the album) and Joy Unspeakable (also worship), the haunting ballad for her backslidden brother Dear John, the collaboration with Matthew West on The Distance (great song) and Israel Houghton on At All Times and you have an album that will rock your world. You need this album.

It seems like some artists put out a couple of good to great albums and then slip away. Not so with Mandisa! In fact, Jesusfreakhideout.com stated that she's only one of eight artists that have left American Idol and have put out four or five albums in the billboard top 200! That's incredible! But what really amazes me is that her success has not, as far as I can tell, ran off with her if you know what I mean. In fact, this album stands as possibly her most heartfelt and Christ centered album yet. She puts bible verses above each song in the inlay. Wish more artists would do this. Mandisa stated this album was birthed from trials and her walk with God, which i think always generates the best music. Overcomer, for instance, is drawn from I John 5:4-5. Face 2 face is soon becoming, and already in my mind a close 2nd or third to her best songs ever penned. Dear John really speaks out about those we love that don't know Christ. It was originally written about mandisa's brother who's name is John who isn't a believer. Not wanting to give this album totally away but one more song or maybe two more that are my fav's and those are Joy Unspeakable and At All Times. This album makes you wanna dance, makes you think about those you want to hear the gospel, and just really a solid album. Spirit anointed album. If you can...buy it. You'll be blessed.
