For years he would spend a week here and a month there among different cultures, but always would return to his normal life. The trips however he took turned his world upside down and blessed him with new perspectives. Single moments in the simplest aspects of life transformed and forced him to realize that people are in control of their lives, not the other way around. That life should be lived intentionally through thick and thin, just as Jesus' and his disciples lived. So Michael's unusual trust in God overrides his fears and, he and his family decide to move away from the comfort and safety of their familiar surroundings and follow Jesus to a little sea-shore village in Portugal.
He takes risks and faces his fears. He ignores his doubts and embraces the chaos of life. There is nothing "normal" now in the lives of Michael and Nina. Or maybe, that is what "normal" should be for everyone, for a world of love and joy, instead of one of fear, pain, and greed.
His reason for writing this book doesn't seem to be just a mere account of his journey. With their example, Michael and Nina remind us that possibilities and opportunities appear when we let our heart guide us out of contentment and into a life of loving, giving, and sacrificing. Having done it, he knows the satisfaction and fulfillment he and his family have found and he wants others to experience the same elation and fulfillment they do.
He is pointing a finger to you and me, daring us to leave our comfort zone and allow Jesus to take us wherever we need to be. To live full heartedly in extraordinary settings. To go to any place that His word needs to be heard. To the mission field. Anywhere, to serve and minister to others.
Not an easy thing to do for most of us who have settled at ease. But this family did take the risk and now thrive in their new settings because they found a hungry and sick Christ and took care of Him. Now, instead of living in the normal they live in the overflow.
"We're not at all special, but a long time ago we decided that we were going to submit our normal selves to an exceptional God. It was a slow process that came to a head when we chose to do something that scared us like nothing else had before.
We made a decision despite the uncertainty and the fear that we were going to plow for- ward instead of sputter until we got stuck. We made a decision that, no matter what...that come what may, we weren't going back to normal."
If you have questions about why a man would move his family of seven to a foreign land to persue God's calling, you must read this book and have a look into the heart of a missionary who sold out to God.
A truth presented with the conviction only personal experience can impart.
Read it, and read it again. I dare you!
The author's writing style reminds me some of Max Lucado. He is a good story teller, and makes his points quickly. It is an easy read but filled with deep insight.
