The truth is, I was not born this way. My journey to becoming a morning person reminds me of lifting weights at the gym: The more you flex a muscle, the stronger it becomes. I’m mostly a happy person (phew). But the reality is that I am not a superwoman.…I just play one on TV (or more accurately, on my Instagram account!).
Kicking my day off right enables me to give my best effort in each hour that follows. So I am disciplined about my mornings and take care of myself the way I would my three kiddos—boy-girl twins Charlie and Lucy, and their little brother, George.
For example, imagine your child has a soccer game tomorrow morning. Would you let him stay up late watching movies? No way! He’d be rubbing his eyes and weepy from fatigue before the game. Would you walk him out the front door without a healthy breakfast? Absolutely not. He’d have a stomachache from hunger pains. What if you forgo the jacket or sweatpants? Good luck actually making it to soccer if he’s cold and uncomfy!
The point is: You’d anticipate everything he needs to feel his best out there…and to minimize the chance of a meltdown along the way. I’ve learned over time that I am basically a toddler in an adult woman’s body. If I’m cold, I’m cranky. If I don’t get enough sleep, I’m oversensitive. If I’m hungry, I can’t hustle. So I anticipate everything I need to tee up an awesome a.m.
This book is the blueprint to making the most—whatever that means to you—of those first few hours and minutes of your day. In chapters one and two, you'll identify your core values: the ways you spend your energy, time, and resources.
Once you’re clear on your values, you’ll leverage them to align your morning routine with your goals, hopes, and dreams. The remaining chapters are filled with science-backed suggestions from researchers, doctors, athletes, engineers, actors, poets, and the editors of Women’s Health for how to do just that. So feel free to read this book choose-your-own-adventure style. Or soak it all up. It’s your journey.
But any healthy choice you make is good. So congrats on a very excellent one: reading this book! It means you’re already improving your well-being and on the way to owning your morning.

It is full of solid suggestions to perfect your established routines, to jump start areas you’ve let slide, and to open you up to new possibilities. It also contains interesting science and candid talk by a number of impressive women. It’s a happiness inducing read with far-reaching advice. Could be called “Own Your Morning—Own Your Life”!
You can tell that this book was written by a magazine editor-in-chief, as there are tons of pictures, creative layouts, and an abundance of colorful artwork and fancy fonts. This really means that there is actually far less text than a regular book of the same length, but it is more visually appealing; and some may be inspired by all the pictures of happy people jumping in the air.
The first few chapters contain some basic suggestions for how to start your day. The author describes three different “chronotypes”, and how they function. She explains her own routine, and then includes short paragraphs of advice from multiple successful women about how they each start their day. There are a few writing exercises included here, to help identify the ways you currently spend your time, and to determine how to align with your core values.
There is a chapter about your nighttime routine, and how to best prepare for the next day. The author discusses planning in advance, and optimizing your schedule and environment for a good night's sleep. The next few chapters discuss breakfast, alcohol, exercise and setting goals. There is also a chapter dealing with maintaining strong social connections with others, and one about the power of meditation. Throughout these chapters, there are short sections written by other people, with some tips and advice, and examples of what they do to become more of a morning person.
The last few chapters discuss skin and beauty routines, colors, productivity, and how to use your weekends. There are also a few recipes thrown in toward the end of the book.
This book has a few good suggestions and ideas, but it is also more of a positive-mindset, inspirational book than a scholarly exploration of morning productivity. From the busy page layouts, to the colors and fonts, to the pictures and stories, everything is designed to motivate you and create a positive and energetic vibe. I would've liked a bit more information about some of topics covered, but I also understand the point here was mainly to motivate and encourage readers to take action.
