I remember perusing a copy of this book several years ago in a public library. I made a note of the title and promised myself I would eventually get a copy. The cover is different but the contents are as I remembered them; a varied collection of amazing narrative poems. A very good read if you like poems that tell stories.

The book, though used, was in very good condition. It brought back memories of my student days when I would repeatedly recite my favourite poems, most of which I knew verbatim ... "Young Lochinvar," "Horatio at the Bridge," "The Highwayman," "The Pied Piper of Hamelin," "The Inchcape Rock,"etc. These narrative poems gave me insight into earlier times and customs, were a counterpart to movies, and sparked my imagination in the days when TV was not yet the powerhouse it is. The poems were also a good source of general knowledge, quite useful for a frequent Jeopardy viewer!

A totally essential acquisition (unless of course you already have it or the contents therein) if you have anything at all of a love for poetry, be it old verse or more modern free poetry. If you're a modernist free verse and prose poetry person or a performance poetry lover, I still say you should be owning this volume, and in most cases I'd say that you'll enjoy it, however much you may grimmace at the rumty dumty rhythms and corny rhymes. It may be what you were taught at school, and have spent your cultural lifetime trying to get away from since, but just have another look at the way stories are effortlessly told in lovely verse. When you summon up the oral tradition used for many centuries that all these poems here were part of, you will appreciate how immensely popular they were, and how effective they were in recounting stories of myth and legend in particular. Personally I still love their rhythms and most of their rhymes, although I realise we've entered a different age now where new forms must be used to better reflect our cultural souls. However, as a poetry lover, this exquisite volume is always on my shelf and is still dipped into whenever I fancy. So go on, have a dip.
