From blitzkrieg and blackout to ghettos and Guadalcanal, World War II was a conflict that touched all nations and penetrated all aspects of people's lives. Sixty years after it ended, it still shapes the world we live in today.
When Oxford first published this comprehensive guide to the Second World War, The Economist wrote "it will immediately take its place as the indispensable reference book for students of the Second World War." Now in its third printing, the Companion proves as essential as ever.
With over 1,750 A to Z entries written by more than 140 specialists from both Axis and Allied nations, the Companion provides uniquely worldwide coverage of the war. Every aspect is covered: in-depth surveys of the countries involved in the conflict; politics and strategy; domestic and economic
issues; resistance and intelligence; campaigns and battles; warfare and weapons; wartime leaders and influential people; slogans and slang. Hundreds of easy-to-read maps, charts, and diagrams, plus a full chronology, support the Companion's comprehensive coverage. This is an essential reference for
students, scholars, history buffs, or anyone seeking to learn more about the most tragic, momentous, and influential event in recent history.

This book bailed me out of a World War 2 history class that used a confusing textbook costing three times the price of this one. Don't hesitate to add this to your library if you are a history buff--youll turn again and again to these articles written by subject matter experts. A must-have.

The Oxford Companion is a must-have shelf reference for anyone intending to seriously study the Second World War. As with many encyclopedias, this means that the amateur or buff will use the entries themselves, and the expert will use the bibliography and suggestions for further reading. It is, at least at this moment, quite reasonably priced for such a serious work of reference, and I likely would not have bought it otherwise. The only drawback is that in changing over to the current edition, the editors seem to have removed the full-color maps that used to be placed at the end of the volume. I do not remember enough of those maps to tell if they are now among the black and white maps placed throughout the body of the work; I do know that the color maps were one of the highlights of the old edition and are much missed by this reviewer.

I have both the current and first edition of this book (in hardcover). As far as I can tell, the new edition is only shorter because it uses a smaller typeface, allowing several more words per line.
However, the new edition is also a bit easier to read despite the smaller size, because the new edition uses a glossy paper and the text seems more sharply defined on the page. This is particularly noticeable in the text of the maps, which I have struggled to read in the first edition, but seem clearer in the new edition.
As an aside, I agree with the general view that this is the single best reference book on World War II. I can't really tell what is changed in the new edition, although it may just be minor corrections, since the several longer articles I have compared seem identical.

I HAD THIS BOOK ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO IN SOFT COVER AND LOVED IT. IT GOT LOST DURING A MOVE. I'M LUCKY TO FIND IT AGAIN. THE BEST ON WWII. NONE BETTER !

Keeping this short I will only say that even though I have read about World War 2 for years, this Companion to WWII was full of condensed original and very insightful information, If you want more in-depth reading, each article has a bibliography of one or more books you can look for to delve deeper.

Not Complete. Reviewed Three items and all were missing such as Hammelburg Stalag, Col Waters, and Maj Stiller all to do with raid of POW CAMP AT WARS END.

The best of the three 'complete' references - the other two being: NY Times Complete WW2 and WW2 Desk Reference (these latter two give the American perspective). Although I'm glad I have all three - they are all very good. All easily searchable by topic.

Thorough resource. An essential book for the study of WWII.

A mighty tome.......

Purchased for my daughter as a reference guide etc for her Advanced Higher History - it's recommended course material. For that reason and the fact that it might end up little used once the exam is done, I got it second hand. Cannot fault the seller at all - prompt delivery, a bargain too.
The book itself is essentially an A-Z of the Second World War - it makes for an impressive companion to most of the other books in my bookcase - I lean more toward the Royal Navy but there's plenty of land and air action in there too. Anyway, back to this - practically every event is covered, an explanation to the event given - sometimes brief and at times lengthy. It's a book more for quick reference than anything else, if you want to dig deeper in to what you're looking up then you'll need to look elsewhere but this makes for fairly easy reading and if something does prick your attention, you'll be able to go away and know exactly what you're looking for.

Great Product, Accurate and substancial

I had been looking for a book as good as this for a long time and its ironic given that this book was published by Oxford University Press originally (not far from my location), that i could not find it anywhere except halfway across the world :) I purchased this because of its great reviews and I wanted something that encompassed World War II as a whole with lots of detail and chronology of the conflict. This does not disappoint and even has many more illustrations than I had expected. With over 1200 pages, I look forward to using this book towards improving my current understanding of the conflict.
Very good informative book that happens to be well structured, correct and substantial in terms of content. I like the level of detail that is covered from the multiple viewpoints.
