The piece is made in China, but the instructions were apparently written by a fluent English speaker -- very clear on every step. There were only two places where we had to rely on the diagram instead of directions to figure it out. Overall, they worked well together. If you haven't worked with Cam bolts before, pay attention to the directions on arrows.
The hardware was all there. They were neatly labeled and matched the diagrams and directions at every step. There is a tool meant to act as the screwdriver for all the screws. It worked fine, but it's handy (not necessary) to have a couple of sizes of Philips drivers. Also, we substituted our own screw (a tiny bit longer and wider) in one place because theirs wasn't getting any purchase in the wood.
The components of the piece are solid and heavy, likely particle board under a couple of thick layers of paint. All the holes were drilled in the right places -- until we got to the drawers. The slide hardware on the sides on the drawers didn't fit the pre-drilled holes. Not even close! So we ended up drilling all the holes. It took a TINY drill bit (sorry - don't know the size, my friend and the drill are gone). For people without a drill, that would be a problem. It took two people (well, one working and the other holding parts upright and handing screws) about 4 hours to put it together. A resourceful person *could* do it alone, but it's handy to have someone else in a couple of places.
It was very wobbly until the back piece braced it. Now, it feels pretty solid -- not like a handmade hardwood piece, but fine for my purposes. The drawers fit perfectly, slide nicely and close solidly. It's sitting on carpet and I had to shim one leg to make it not wobble, but on a hard surface, I think it would be good.
I plan to treat it fairly gently, as with all do-it-yourself furniture. I don't want to stress the joints or slam drawers, etc. I have several heavy duty hanging files, but I wanted something that would be handy to my desk for frequently used things and for the printer to sit on. So, overall, I was more pleased than I thought I'd be. It looks great! I'd recommend it to people who have a drill or a friend with one.
