Illustrated Histories--offers a lively and authoritative account of life in medieval Europe and the Mediterranean.
The great monasteries and cathedrals, the ambitions of the Crusades, chivalric knights and heroic romance, the realism of the new arts, economic and social growth, the catastrophe of plague, the growth of towns and cities, the development of commerce and banking--all of these form the substance
of this history. The six chapters of the book are divided between the Mediterranean world and northern Europe, illustrating how the center of political and cultural life moved gradually northward as the centuries progressed.
Written by a team of expert scholars and incorporating the findings of the latest research, the volume features more than 200 illustrations, 24 of them in color, all carefully chosen to amplify the text. Other features of the book include maps, genealogies, a chronology, reading list, and a
full index.

Review
'In this beautifully illustrated collection of essays the editor and his six collaborators present a picture of that civilization which is well written and well presented.' Contemporary Review
'The rich diversity of the period is admirably conveyed ... and visually enhanced by hundreds of the fine illustrations. With maps, chronology and a comprehensive reading-list, this attractively produced reference book will appeal to a wide readership.' David L. Edwards, Church Times
'the contributors have lucidity as well as learning in common. This book will make a good companion for sightseeing trips abroad.' Bob Marshall, Bookseller
'Among the individual contributors the palm goes to Edward James for his masterly survey of northern Europe 400-900 ... The illustrations have been well selected and excellently reproduced' James Howard-Johnston, Sunday Times
'The individual chapters are scholarly and up to the minute, without loss of accessibility or pace. The illustrations are many, apposite, and refreshingly unhackneyed.' Times Literary Supplement
'a splendid volume, presenting contemporary scholarship to the general reader with care, grace, much thought and many illustrations; filled with things that most general readers won't know at all, and that many specialist readers won't have thought of' London Review of Books
'With over 200 magnificent illustrations, this is likely to become a standard introduction to the subject.' Good Book Guide
'ambitious and informative' History Today
'The volume is full of splendid illustrations, some in full colour, many of them unusual, and these make a notable contribution to the quality of the book. We should be grateful to the entire production team, and not least to the printers, for having done an outstanding job in making available a volume which deserves to sell well at the very reasonable price at which it has been published.' French History
'This is a very fine book - surely one of the best of its kind so far produced.' Journal of Medieval History
'The Oxford History is a magnificent counter to the trick of patronising the past, and the fearful gadzookery by which our forebears are made to look simple, if not outright stupid. It's superb.' Barbara Jeferis, The Independent Monthly
'The illustrations are lavish, well-chosen and with informative captions, to convey an impression of the material culture of the age. Useful maps and a chronological table round off the volume. There are many good things in this volume ... As an attractive companion to the middle ages this work has its value.' Nicholas Hooper, Bradford Grammar School, History No. 243

Actually the Middle Ages were full of light, life, music, architecture, poetry and literature, most of which were missed by this book. It might have been a more enjoyable if the writers had understood that Rome was indeed fallen, so they didn't need to tell all the political history of the Holy Roman Empire which superseded it.
Still one has to start somewhere when learning history. This book, despite its flaws is readable and short (only 398 pages, counting index). I was disappointed at the lack of anything approaching reasonably complete discussion of the insular Celtic and Nordic worlds of the times, particularly the rich artistic and literary traditions of the north. Since this is the Oxford history I'd expected this stereotypically English neglect so wasn't startled by it. Neither was I surprised to see fragments of fossilized remnants of opinion left over from that Oxford don, Edward Gibbon.
There was a lack of full discussion of implications of the Islamic invasions and there was dry and lifeless discussion of the Frankish and Teutonic worlds, other Medieval politics, but for the most part the political parts of the history were as comprehensive as you can get in 400 pages in our postmodern academic climate.
I would recommend that the reader who is not forced to read this book by an unenlightened professor or who doesn't need it to fight insomnia should instead read Robert Fossier's "The Cambridge Illustrated History of The Middle Ages" or Barry Cunliffe's charming text, "Europe Between the Oceans 9000 BC to 1000 AD". Both are much more pleasant reads and the writers have a better sense of drama. (This is surprising since Cunliffe also edited Oxford histories.)
Revised to give more opinion.
