My copy is MISSING 50 PAGES. No French words past "S" and no english words before "B." Because of the defect it is completely worthless for academic translating.

Oxford is a trusted dictionary, IMO. I use several French dictionaries and have this one in my backpack when on campus - updated information is paramount plus a few of the extras added come in handy i.e. numbers and it also is an 'extra' weight item and in this case...light weight helps with the number of books etc. needed for classes.

I bought this as a replacement for my 20-year old copy, but it seemed to be a diminished version. Great for beginning students of the language, but not for advanced speakers.

Handy for when I watch French TV
Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2016
I previously reviewed this dictionary, thinking that I had the 2nd edition and that it was similar to the 3rd edition. I found out today (7/25/17) that I have had the 3rd edition all along, just an early printing (doesn't have the "completely updated" gold sunburst on the cover). Today I found the 2nd edition (ISBN 9780425160107) on archive.org and discovered the dramatic differences between the 2nd edition, which I would give a 5 star rating, and the 3nd edition which I still rate at 3 stars. (1) The second edition has more words. In the first two pages alone, I discovered that the 3rd edition dropped more that a dozen words. Other words that it has dropped from the French-English side: corridor, régner, grommeler, and pénétration, just to name a few that I have tried to look up while reading a French novel. (2) As I said in my first review of this book, the 3rd edition drastically exaggerates the number of entries (100,000 words, phrases and translations), where the 2nd edition cover brags about 48,000 "entries", even though it has more entries than the 3rd edition. (3) The 1st and 2nd editions are edited by Michael Janes, who previously was the editor of the fabulous Harrap Micro and Pocket French dictionaries (which I also own). The Oxford 3nd edition no longer includes Michael Janes as an editor. So my advice is: Stick with the second edition or get the 1988 edition of the Harrap Pocket French dictionary.

I purchased the Oxford New French Dictionary as my "travel" dictionary--one that I could take to class with me. The other dictionary I have is large and hardcover, a little too bulky to carry around with me. This one is incredibly simple to page through and find the words, and it is very portable, which is a bonus when one does not want to carry any more heavy books. I also liked that there is a key in the back of the book with several French verbs and their conjugations. At such a reasonable price, I highly recommend this book.

Don't buy!!!

The paper quality is not good. No translation in the form of sentences has been provided. Only word meanings are given. It is a small size dictionary. The letters are very small. So please don't buy this dictionary at all. Only the cover of the book is of high quality.
