This small dense manual is good for those who have completed a year or two of Russian in college and would like summaries of grammatical constructions using a broad ranging vocabulary. In addition to verb conjugation, there are detailed declensions of nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs, with a decent attempt to review and enlarge your vocabulary. The are many digressions treating irregular forms but these are not so numerous as to confuse or mar the main treatment. There are no pronunciation guides and so you are expected to be able to work out the sounds of the words by knowing the Russian alphabet pretty much backwards and forwards; syllables are given accent markings as appropriate, though. There is a section listing many important verbs and their English equivalents. If you are fuzzy on terms of grammatical use, there is a section explaining them. The book is not for beginners, but ancillary material is available in other books to allow a persistent student to advance.

THis is a great compact Russian grammar book. It is very well organized and once you get used to the organization you can answer many common questions. It's great to have by the TV when watching a movie.
The main advantage is it's compact size, organization, accuracy and cost (you can afford to even have more than one copy so it's always handy).
Like all Russian grammar books, it's very weak on coloquial Russian, especially on particles, elliptical sentences, sentence structure and many aspects of how grammar interacts in Russian across sentences and between parties of a conversation. It's my opinion that none of the non native speaking authors understand how this part of Russian works. The explanations never hold water and I've figured out a lot of it myself and the things I've figured out are not in any grammar book, including the ones from Russia.
In general, native speakers understand it all from being exposed to it from childhood and they don't conceptualize it well to non native speakers either. The non native speakers are generally clueless as to how it works.
Coloquial russian though is not street slang but how people talk in real life, at the office, at the market.
It's not a deep Russian grammar book but the bigger ones rarely answer the tougher questions either.

I've had this book for a while now, and for the first time I forgot to bring this hefty little book with me to my abroad program (not in Russia). When I still had this book, it was VERY detailed in specific in the full spectrum of Russian grammar. We're talking case agreement for nouns and adjectives, perfect/imperfect and unidirectional/multidirectional verb conjugations and uses, and most importantly, the high volume of irregularities found throughout the russian language (something very beneficial for beginners if they take thier time). Without this book, It's been hard for me to find the right resources to disect Russian grammar like this little book does. I recommend this book to anyone learning Russian. If you're into Rosetta Stone or Pimsleur, keep in mind they don't break down grammar for you and it's mainly just audio. Teach yourself books provide basic grammar notes however it's not entirely enough to barter with when you step into the real world of Russian.

The book's spine was damaged and there was no mention of this defect when I ordered this book.

This is a huge library quality reference book. As a serious student of languages, I am pleased to have this comprehensive volume.

I am currently learning Russian. My Russian teacher recommended this for me to purchase and she is a native of Russia. Very helpful to have for verbs and for the grammar rules. I sent one to my Ukrainian fiance and she uses it in her English lessons. I use it in my lessons and in my own studies as I feel it explains grammar rules just as well as my teacher does. It is a nice, small reference to have on my trips to the Ukraine.

Good background on the grammar and verbs one must live with to speak and use Russian. Still does not make learning the subject easy but it helps to take away some of the confusion.

printed on toilet paper

The paper is a yellowy grey, rough and absorbent rather than glossy, which is probably why the print is grey rather than black and the contrast terrible. The low budget presentation makes what could have been an attractive little book almost unreadable.
I stand by that, but having used the book now for a few days I am raising my rating from one star to three because the content (if you can manage to read it) is actually very good. You do need to be at an appropriate level to make good use of it. So, for example, if you had little idea about what cases were you would probably find the book hard to follow. The conciseness, which would make it doubly hard for a complete novice, is inspiring if you can follow it, because it encourages a belief that one will be able to learn (for example) a scheme for declining the vast majority of nouns.
I now think it will become a valuable resource.

Complicated and difficult to understand

I bought this as a semi-beginner along with Russian Course by Brown. I am now half-way through the latter, but every time I turn to Oxford Russian Grammar and Verbs, I return, confused and disappointed, to Brown's trusty coursebook, which in any case contains all the grammar you need.
The grammar in this book is explained in very technical terms, and I say this as someone studying his fourth foreign language, and does not contain the easy-reference conjugations of the verbs which I was hoping to find. I may now try the Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs, which has good reviews, but the Oxford grammar is likely to stay on the bookshelf!

Concise but comprehensive - very easy to understand!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 13, 2008
This book condenses a lot of information into a small space, but doesn't scrimp on detail - it covers all the major points of larger grammars such as Wade's huge Russian Grammar tome, but is compact enough to carry round in your pocket.
Each point is very clearly explained with a lot of vocabulary in the examples - very useful for boosting your base vocabulary in Russian as you revise / learn the grammar.
The verbs section is perhaps a little short, and you might want to supplement the book with another dedicated, more detailed verb book like The Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs (Big Book of Verbs Series) , but as far as grammar guides go, you won't miss any of the important points by relying on this handy guide!

Oxford Russian Grammar and Verbs.

I have other Grammar books that promise things like "made easy", "made simple", and...."for beginners", but this book delivers!, it says on the cover" clear and simple explanations" and that's exactly what it does.
Grammar in any language is always a pain, but this book has thousands of examples, covering every aspect of " Nom,Acc,Gen, Dat,Ins and Prep. The work is even defined into different typeface for different examples, making it easier to search for worked examples just by spotting the typeface relative to the required subject. In short, for learning Grammar quickly and painlessly, this book is a winner.

Useful but print needs to be bigger
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 15, 2015
My only complaint about this very useful book is that the print is very tiny. I have Oxford Russian-English dictionary for beginners and it is larger in size than the grammar book and the print is larger. Other than that, this book explains the grammar very clearly and I have no complaints.
