Oy to the World! is an unrepentant collection of traditional carols, hymns, and Christmas high jinks played in the rousing, Jewish klezmer tradition. Talk about worlds colliding, this set throws its considerable, klezmetric weight around, turning the real "Joy to the World" into a dramatic, jazzy piece that swings and romps. With a few witty musical asides sprinkled into select songs among the 10 tracks, the Klezmonauts' only fault is that they may be too hip for the holiday party. Guaranteed either to send goyim fleeing from the room or your Yiddish grandmother rushing into the room to see what's the matter. In any event, it's fun, funny, and as effective as a shot of Jägermeister and just as unkosher. --Martin Keller

I first heard this cd as bumper music on the Michael Medved radio show, couldn't stop thinking about it, and wanted to hear more, so I bought it. I love traditional Christmas carols and songs, and as a Christian, I don't like them "messed with". I love this cd! It makes you happy, makes want to dance, and it's full of delightful surprises. I think children would love it, too. Warning: If you play "Santa Gey Gezunderheit", you'll be singing it all day long and into the next. My least favorite Christmas song has always been "The Little Drummer Boy" -- so monotonous -- but I love this version. Only thing is, I want more, and this is all the Klezmonauts have recorded as far as I know. It truly helps one feel the pure joy of Christmas! More, please.

While not a fan of klezmer music, I was, nonetheless, blown away by this album! The creative juice that melded the traditional Christmas carol with the frenetic klezmer, threw in a little beach boys and riffs from the good, the bad, and the ugly, and a little Christmas ditty filled with Yiddish slang to top it all off, can only be described as pure genius.
Libman's compositions, for me anyway, run hot and cold. Oy to the World, the title song, is definitely the most klezmer/Christmas fusion, while, at the other end of the scale, Away in a Manger is almost Muzak. Jingle Bells sung in Yiddish(?) was clearly a surprise, as was the cute factor of the original Santa Gey Gezunderheit.
Much of the album has earned a place on my Christmas playlist, itself an accomplishment since I own over 100 Christmas CD's.
And don't forget your galoshes!

I celebrate Christmukkah (ie I put up a tree and have a menorah) in my house with my wife & kids.
I'm also sick and tired of the same Holiday Music Dreck on the radio.
A couple of years ago I discovered that SOMA FM ([...]) adds a Holiday Muzik station that's totally wonnerful and twisted.
Last Holiday I'm listening to SOMA FM's 'Christmas In Frisko' holiday audio stream and out from my computer's speakers comes this great mash-up.
It's Xmas music played in the Klezmer style!
It's too Trafe to be Good! At least it won't clear the room like 'Jingle Cats'<g>
This CD makes a great Holiday gift for the Yiddishim and Goyim alike.
.....I wonder if these guys are gonna make a sequel CD?

I just love Christmas music and listen to it whenever I feel like it - regardless of the season. Since we are celebrating the birth of a jew at Christmas, I thought: Why not a jewish take on our beloved carols, and I was pleasantly surprised. This Klezmer "dress up" gives a fresh, attractive appearance of the carols I've known since childhood. I listen to the recordings on my i-Phone, I bought the Mp3 version and downloaded the Amazon App so I can enjoy the music wherever I am. I highly recommend this CD.

Like some of the other reviewers, I heard excerpts of this album on the radio played as "bumper" music, and really liked the short snippets. However, after listening to the entire album, only two or three songs were good, and most of the songs sound very similar. After listening to the album several times, it began to remind me of slapstick music used for old comedies.

After being cynical and tired of Christmas media out since Halloween, I put this CD on a couple weeks before Christmas and found myself laughing and getting into the spirit again. The renditions are cleverly transposed into Semitic minor keys, many played at ridiculously quick tempo. The arrangements and musicianship are awesome and fun at the same time. It will make even the surliest Scrooge put on a holiday smile.

Save for the Messianic believers, of course Jews don't celebrate Christmas. Still in our American culture, Jews have always had a connection to it. Irving Berlin wrote "WHITE CHRISTMAS". A few years ago, Neil Diamond recorded a very well received Christmas CD. There are many such stories to tell.
Here, the idea of using the mesmerizing, yet festive style of Klezmer music is used to offer a whole new way for all of us to enjoy our Christmas favorites. "DECK THE HALLS" for example literally becomes hypnotically danceable without sounding the least bit disrespectful to the solemnity of the song or the Holiday.
There are parts where the musicians drifted into silliness. If one listens carefully, some of guitar work and accompanying drums become reminiscent of the 60's hit, "WIPEOUT" by the Safaris. While this takes away from what seemed to be the true mission of this CD, the musicians are so proficient and energetic that we can forgive the few places where they got a bit carried away.
It's been ten years since this "OY TO THE WORLD" CD was released, and I'm shocked at how few people know about it. For anyone who loves Christmas music, this is a must have to play for your Christmas parties when the season comes around again. If the Klezmonauts are reading this, it's been a decade! Think about going back into the studio because there are many more Christmas songs that await your treatment. But please stick to the mission and put your surfing and other unrelated tracks on a separate CD.

I have a lot of Christmas CDs and records, but this is right up there. Classic songs, expertly performed, but crucially just off-kilter enough without being cheesy. I can't recommend this highly enough.
