This little book is a very refreshing perspective on backcountry hiking. It is certainly dated but since there is no shortage of information on the latest gear and techniques, this book provides other key ideas. Wood's views on the usefulness of vapor barriers alone makes this book worth the price. His ideas on finding or forming a comfortable bed area are original (although not appropriate to all campsites) and effective for getting a good night's sleep. I also think he is right on in the areas of cooking, navigating, and general backcountry philosophy. The fact that his suggestions for stoves is out of date doesn't matter, there are plenty of guides for current gear. Wood's original and well tested backpacking methods are still very relevent.

I don't know of any other book this tiny that contains so much good information! One of the negative reviewers asked, "Where's the problem-solving?" The problem-solving is contained IN the information given in this book! Follow the information and it will solve any problem before it occurs. As a light-weight backpacker, I'm strict about weight and thus about what I take with me. But this little book always has a place in my backpack.

I’ve never in my life been a backpacker or camper, but I’m a long-time walker gearing up for the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I asked an experienced backpacking friend for advice, and he loaned me “The 2 Oz. Backpacker.” I figure any book that’s still selling 32 years after it came out must have some good advice. I found this tiny book full of useful information. Ideas like Indian sunglasses and the limp step are a little out there, but in a pinch, they could have their place. I appreciated the somewhat scientific considerations for things like figuring out how much to carry based on body weight and condition. The basic checklist at the end of the book got me thinking and adding to my own list. Wood gives a good bit of advice for parents hiking with children that I wish I had read back when my kids were young. As a novice backpacker, I learned and found the book worthwhile.

This book wasn't exactly what I thought--I thought it was information on how to reduce your gear weight. It does have a bit on that, but mostly it contained information I already knew. It would, however, be excellent for someone starting out or for people that want to keep certain information at hand on a trip--after all, the book weighs (you guessed it)2 oz.

I don't really know what the other reviewers are talking about,
this is a little gem of a book, wonderfully written and packed, yes, with common sense advice, which doesn't get out of style.
Mr. Wood is clear and eloquent.

Keep in mind this book is 22 years old equipment and knowledge have made huge leaps forward, there are some tidbits here but you wouldn't catch me wrapping my feet in Saran Wrap or wearing a garbage bag as a vapor barrier. Both bad moves for your body. I would not look to this book just starting out, outdated info and lack of details on proper pack loading depending on the terrain you will encounter, should keep you looking for another book.

This book had some good information in it for the beginner to novice hiker / backpacker looking for a quick reference guide on what to do in certain circumstances and what to pack and wear for an outing.

To be clear, I didn't buy this book. I downloaded it free as an ebook from my local library. And I overpaid at that. The author should either update the book or pull it from distribution. It is absurdly outdated. Digging trenches around your tent? Collecting wood for fires? Wrapping your body in trashbags? Sunglasses are bad for you?

Um, no. About the only thing this book is good for is starting a fire. In your fireplace.
