But where there are shape shifters and mysterious pasts, there is always conflict. Allistair, a sinister werewolf, is forming a pack to track down Miri while making plans to steal her amulet and take down the secret society. A plethora of questions are soon raised as the intensity builds: Where is Miri's mother? Why does Allistair want Miri's amulet? Are their young wolves in the society who are actually on Allistair's side? And who is Miri's father?
Kupfer introduces a whole world of both good and bad characters, each with their own story lines that revolve around Miri. She does a fantastic job of characterization, building each personality and explaining their powers. There's even a gentle love story. But more importantly for me was the historical aspect of the story.
I had the pleasure of hearing, in person, Mrs. Kupfer read the first chapter of her book before it was published. I was immediately drawn into the story due to its Nazi Germany setting in the introduction. And hearing the author read it, it's easy to see the passion she put into the book. I heard her voice in my head as I read the book which made it even more lively.
Being an animal lover, and living in St. Louis made the book even more enjoyable. It's always fun to read a story that takes place in locales that you are familiar with. Here we have Forest Park, the Jewel Box, the St. Louis Zoo, and Turtle Park, all places I know well and have visited so I always knew where the action was taking place.
I could have used a bit more resolution in the end, but it is my understanding there is a sequel to come. I have no doubt Kupfer will pick up where she left off, my questions will be answered, and there will be more adventures waiting for Miri and her friends. I highly recommend this book to the young fantasy readers, Harry Potter enthusiasts, animal lovers, or other St. Louisians. It's a book to be enjoyed by all ages.
Note: there are some violent scenes, including ones in which characters witness the death of a loved one. I think the level of violence is appropriate to the story and acceptable for teens, but not for younger children.
On a side note, I particularly enjoyed the part of the story about Miri's Omama (grandmother). Though she made only a brief appearance, she felt very real to me, and I hope the author will write more about her someday.
I give P.A.W.S. a solid four stars and I look forward to a sequel.
One of my favorite quotes, “Oh, no, there were no vampires in the wilds of Transylvania. There was something far more dangerous.” This quote set the tone making me want to discover what was ‘far more dangerous’. Give this author a try I hope you’ll be as impressed as I was.
