I you are not very computer savy, don't get the Palm Zire 71. It fit my budget however and feature set for my budget. So far, it is filling the bill. It shows photos well, plays mp3's OK (Using real player sucks tho - GUI interface really poor). It has locked up once on me. No clear reason except was while trying to read a PDF.
The cradle is the worst design I have ever seen, you better get it on right or it does not connect and tips really really easy. We'll see if the cradle lasts.
Software included very very antiquated. I am going to have to get tealdoc just to read text files easily. I use it for practicing music on guitar and it works for that but a lot of fiddling.
My wife could never never use this thing.
Screen is excellent, Graffiti is better than my old visor. Seems to work fine with 512 meg sd card.
camera would be useful in a crash to document, not much else tho except really low quality snaps.
Other than this flaw, I have loved my Zire 71. I have almost had it for a year. I have purchased the dictionary/thesarus card and a memory card so that I can listen to MP3s.
I have owned three Palm products in the last 4 years and each has lasted only about a year. Their products appear to be too unreliable. I am now looking at alternatives.
I bought it basically for business names and addresses and the date book, but have found other neat uses - the photo capability has become my traveling photo album - not only does it take pics, but you can crop and store other pics for "show and tell". At first, I was disappointed in the "Audible" feature, but it has since been upgraded and I use it for listening to books. I did have to buy an expansion card but I have a lot of info in here.
No problems hot-syncing and my battery lasts quite a while - depends on how often you use it, but when using the audio features, the light goes out to conserve battery life. I don't use it for games so I can't comment on that.
Overall, it's been a great first PDA for me and I recommend it.
