-Hasn't crapped out on me yet
-Great BIOS interface, truly one of my favorites
-16 GB Max DDR3 RAM which is the most you'll ever need for an older chipset like this
-There is no USB 3.0 header (old tech here remember) which is disappointing, but I have only one USB 3.0 port on my Corsair Spec 01 Case anyways so it's not a big deal. You can buy a USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapter so you can at least use any 3.0 ports as 2.0 ports instead of just having a dead port on your PC.
-If you have a long graphics card like the GTX 970 it will block two SATA ports, leaving you with only two left. This really is some faulty architectural design there, but despite what other reviews say YOU CAN access all four ports if you use right angle SATA cables, check out monoprice for good cheap cables.
-DON'T OVERCLOCK WITH THIS MOBO (skip if you don't know what overclocking is, this doesn't apply to you). It simply isn't going to handle the increased power output well and you risk destroying your other components. If you plan on OC'ing an i7 2600k you are better off spending a bit more for a better motherboard, or better yet, just buy a new skylake CPU and motherboard and sell your old CPU (this is old tech now!). Same goes for OC'ing GPUs. A GTX 970 at 1080p doesn't need OC'ing for the most part.Read more ›
The pros are that I purchased 20 of these and not a single one had any issue at all. Not one. The boards have all the settings I needed, the memory runs at the XMP speeds, I can set it to auto power on after a power loss, and skip any errors to just boot up. Those setting are important to me as these run at remote locations and need to boot themselves in cases of power loss. They are very reliable, I've have many of these out for a year now with no issues and no failures yet. I really and truly have no major complaints at all with these boards, my minor ones are below.
My biggest con is that there is not SATA 6 port on the board to get the full speed out of my SSD, but I knew that going in and it was not a big enough deal to get another board. The other issue I have is that this board is impossible for me to find easily on the ASUS web site when I'm looking for things like a new BIOS. Annoying as all get out trying to find, once I do I keep it and put them all on the same one, but there are many slight variations of the boards and only the exact right BIOS will work of course. Once found the update process is awesome, but man there has to be a better way to actually fine them in the first place!
That's it, if there are any questions just ask as I've used these a lot, but I really do like them. The video also works perfectly, even if dual monitors are connected. I am very pleased with these overall and will buy them again if needed.
I have an Nvidia GTX970 on this board. It looks comical but it works! Two slots for RAM still allows 16GB. I even managed to make my water cooler fit onto my processor despite it being a tight fit, but I definitely wouldn't recommend doing that for a new computer. Again, this was just a replacement board to get another year or so out of my processor.
I have done quite a bit of gaming on this board by now. Battlefield 4, Planetside 2, various MMO's and other genres. There has been no change as far as gaming is concerned as compared to my old motherboard.
ASUS puts out good products. As others have written, this board works for smaller and more basic builds extremely well. While I'd recommend a bigger motherboard with more room and features for a new gaming computer, this one works just fine as a replacement of an old one.
Installing & initial setup of this mobo went smoothly with no problems. I found the manual well written and clear. Games are running fantastic with my new GTX 960 FTW.
Two things I'd like to note for potential buyers:
1. It does not come with screws. So if you're considering this for a "from scratch" build where you cannot use the screws from the mobo you're replacing you will need to pick those up.
2. It comes with 2 sata cables but only one is L shaped. If you plan on using this for a large video card you're almost certainly going to need two L shaped sata cables (possibly more depending on the card size and if you're using an after market cooling system) due to the location of the sata connectors on the mobo. I used two L shaped connectors at the top and my big video card fit just fine. (I have a mid-sized HAF tower so chassis room is a non-issue, but if you're using something smaller consider this as well when upgrading a video card).
