May 22, 2015 marked the 35th anniversary of one of the most iconic video game symbols of all time: PAC-MAN. PAC-MAN, born in Tokyo by Toru Iwatani of Namco, forever changed video games by giving the world the first bright, colorful, recognizable characters. In honor of this, Eugene Jarvis, designer of Defender, Robotron, Cruis’n, and the founder of indie developer Raw Thrills, created a tribute to Toru Iwatani, Shigeo Funaki, and the “Pakku-Man” development team for PAC-MAN’s 35th Anniversary.
This limited-edition, handmade clock is made from a matrix of Jumbotron LED’s, a high-quality optical-grade polycarbonate cover and sits in a sleek, low-profile shell. We took the large-format iconic LED display used in our hit game "PAC-MAN Chomp Mania" and engineered a more compact version, suitable for the home and office. This smaller version is very bright and features vivid color, but takes up a smaller footprint and has a much sleeker appearance. The resolution is the same as the arcade hit, but it fits nicely on the desk and makes a tasteful but bold statement of who you are.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Does the clock run on batteries? Because of the vibrant high-powered LED's, the clock cannot run on batteries.
Can the clock be hung on a wall? Due to the integrated stand, the clock is not designed to hang on a wall.
What is the operating voltage range? The clock can operate between 100 - 240 VAC.

Everything seemed fine, until one morning I came downstairs and saw that the display was blank. I checked the plug and the surge protector. All was fine. So I unplugged it, plugged it back in and it came on fine. I shrugged it off as a fluke. But then a few days later, I noticed the time was several hours off. The clock must have lost power and reset to midnight. (NOTE: Nothing else in my apartment showed signs of a power loss, and if there had even been a flicker, my stove clock would have reset.)
The next day, I was watching TV and I saw the clock flicker and reset to midnight. I kept watching it and it kept doing this several times. It never went more than 10 minutes without resetting to midnight. With that, I was done. I returned it for a refund.
I contacted Raw Thrills customer service about this issue, and they did not respond to me. I would have given it 1 star, but the fact is the display is beautifully done. If only the clock wasn't defective and Raw Thrills followed through with their customer service, I'd have given it 5 stars.
Finally, and this is just a deficiency in its design, but a battery backup would have been a nice feature on this. If you unplug it or it loses power, you have to reset the day/time EVERY time. A display dimmer would have been a nice feature, too. But for $79.99, this is so not worth it.
Now, the clock itself is great. I really like it. The 20x10cm display is gorgeous; probably the most expensive component of the clock. However, I don't think this makes it ideal as a desk clock. Let me explain. The LED matrix is very bright. Even when viewed from a little over three feet away (the edge of my desk), it puts a lot of strain on my eyes. The animation is cool, but it runs approximately every 15 seconds, which is distracting if you are trying to focus on your work. There is no setting for controlling this feature. From a distance, it is really nice to look at, and for sure there are people who won't be distracted by the animations, but I think it could have been better designed as a wall clock.
There are other things that bothered me a bit. While the clock does what it supposed to do, it feels incomplete. Maybe it was rushed to production so it would coincide with the 35th Anniversary of Pac-Man? There is no alarm function, even though there seems to be a grill on the back that indicates that there were plans to implement a speaker. Imagine hearing the Pac-Man theme or a sound bit as your morning alarm (sigh). The instructions were obviously not proofread; the right button is supposed to be for switching between the settings (hr, min, 24-hr clock) and the left one is for adjusting them. There is also a setting for displaying the day of the week (which wasn't mentioned), but perplexingly it is not used in the main display. It would have been really cool to see the display segue between the time and date every time the animation runs. There are also settings that serve no function whatsoever. I read that you can hack the clock, but alas, I don't have the tools or technical know-how to do so. It's such a niche product, I doubt I would be able to find instructions on how to do that anyway.
I so badly want to keep this clock. It's a great concept with huge potential. If Raw Thrills took the time and care to refine the product and implement an alarm feature and functions for controlling the brightness and animation cycle rate, it would have been well worth the price; even if it was factory-produced and not a limited edition release. Sadly, I may have to decide to return it.
The pacman scenes are fine, but it's a clock so it should keep time correctly
