The vintage picks on this fourteen-track set nicely conjure the ring-a-ding-ding jet-age culture of television's Pan Am. Unfortunately, the inclusion of two contemporary cover versions reeks of marketing opportunism, and interrupts the vintage vibe of an otherwise finely programmed collection. Grace Potter and Nikki Jean's fans may enjoy their renditions of, respectively, "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Do You Want to Know a Secret," but the modernity of their vocal styles sticks out among the company they're keeping here.

The set opens with the underappreciated Buddy Greco swinging "Around the World" as if he's got Rat Pack-era Las Vegas on a string. He sports the energy of Louis Prima and the cool of a young Bobby Darin. Darin himself brings the program back on track with a terrific version of "Call Me Irresponsible." The collection includes international space-age bachelor pad chestnuts "The Girl From Ipanema," "Mais Que Nada," and "Quando Quando Quando" and serves up several lesser-known, but no less superb items. Ella Fitzgerald scats brilliantly through Rodgers & Hart's "Blue Skies" and Peggy Lee opens "New York City Blues" as a smoky ballad before bursting into joyous celebration of all things Big Apple.

Shirley Horn provides a master class in jazz vocals with "The Best is Yet to Come," a tune famously recorded by Sinatra and Basie in `64. Basie's band adds its own notes of sophistication with the horn chart for Hank Williams' "I Can't Stop Loving You," and Brenda Lee's "Break it to Me Gently" will break listeners' hearts with its gut-wrenching vocal. Nikki Jean has the bad fortune to follow Lee's tour de force, sounding cute, but inconsequential in comparison. The set ends with Dinah Washington's superb "Destination Moon," closing a fine set of jet-age artifacts from and inspired by the television show. [©2012 hyperbolium dot com]

The series "Pan Am" didn't last as long as I had hoped it would; but we certainly do get some excellent music to remember it by! True, I do agree with others who write or say that a couple of the tracks here don't completely fit in; but they are nevertheless rather well done so it's not a huge problem. The quality of the sound is excellent; and you can choose to buy the CD, download the music MP3s all at once or just download the songs you want to enjoy over and over again.

Buddy Greco's "Around the World" showcases his fine ability to sing; he has been forgotten and I agree with the reviewer who writes that Buddy is underappreciated. If there was any doubt that Buddy could sing, just one listen to this track will tell you he sure could! Grace Potter's "Fly Me to the Moon" is one of the two tracks that don't completely fit in; but Grace sings with genuine passion and I really like that. Bobby Darin makes "Call Me Irresponsible" his own by playing just a bit with the tempo and adding some key changes; it all holds its own very well. Ella Fitzgerald's "Blue Skies" charms me with its beauty as well as Ella's scatting; and listen for Stan Getz's most elegant "The Girl from Ipanema."

Peggy Lee does great justice to "New York City Blues;" wow, how she always sang so well! Shirley Horn's "The Best Is Yet to Come" is another winner and "Mas Que Nada" gets the royal treatment from Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. Billie Holiday's delivery of "Just One More Chance" is poignant and that lush musical arrangement complements her singing to perfection. Count Basie does a great job with "I Can't Stop Loving You" and there's yet another gem in "Break It to Me Gently" by the great Brenda Lee.

Hats off to the sound engineers on this one for coaxing incredibly clear sound and wise mixes out of this (mostly) very old material. Nice job!

The newer versions are classy too and don't seem out of place for a modern TV show that was trying to evoke the period (and I thought doing a reasonably good job of it considering the lack of a 'movie' budget).

I was raised on calypso, reggae, classic rock, and country, so this was a bit of a stretch - 'Pan Am,' Eastern, and Transworld airlines were really my parent's generation. It turned out to be a great pick!

Who ever knew orchestral pop music from that period could be so exciting? The good mixes and clear sound quality helped immensely. I repeatedly found myself reaching to crank the volume up and far more songs quickly made it into my top playlist than I expected.

A satisfyingly well done collection to remember the 'now defunct' show by.

Although this TV series did not survive, the music from that era does! I am wonderfully satisfied with both the
new (Grace Potter) and established artists on the sound tracks of this historic period. All very much standards in
American popular music.

Great period music that you can listen to over and over again. I'm so sorry that this show was not renewed for a second season. I'm sure the music well has not run dry, and there likely would have been another album such as this one to add to your collection. For now, this will have to do, and it does very well.

The new covers of a couple of songs in this CD and the blending of different styles and genres make this a great mix for listeners of all ages. The Beatles' "Do You Want To Know A Secret" would have stuck out like a sore thumb if the original had been used, but the cover fits in. Grace Potter's cover of "Fly Me to The Moon" is possibly my favorite song on this album -- a classic that suddenly feels new. It's not hard to create a "greatest hits" selection of Sinatra, Ella, Bobby Darin etc., but it's hard to make it interesting without making jarring mistakes. This mix saved me the trouble of attempting it myself. It's one of the rare CDs I own that can be played without skipping certain tracks.
